The short answer
Garage door companies charge $150 to $600 for a repair, with a $75 to $150 service call (Housecall Pro, March 2026). By the job: rollers $100 to $250, safety sensors $100 to $250, track alignment $125 to $300, cables $150 to $350, a torsion spring $200 to $500 and an opener replacement $300 to $800. This Old House's average repair is $479, in a $98 to $860 range (May 2026).
A new door is a project: $800 to $1,800 to install a single-car door and $1,200 to $2,500 or more for a double, $1,200 to $3,500 for a double-insulated door and $2,500 to $6,000 or more for custom wood (Housecall Pro). The door itself, for a 16-by-7 double, runs $700 to $3,500 in steel, $950 to $2,500 in vinyl and $2,000 to $6,000 in wood, with the labor at $375 to $575 and the old door's removal at $50 to $200 (Fixr, January 2025).
The opener installed is $300 to $600, about $480 on average (Fixr). The hour is the check, not the price: $75 to $100 an hour (Fixr), about $60 on average and $150 or more at the top (This Old House), and after hours the labor runs 1.5 to 2 times standard with a $150 to $300 emergency service call (Housecall Pro).
Price from the parts and the hours: labor + materials + overhead is break-even, then price = break-even ÷ (1 − margin), with Housecall Pro targeting 25% to 45% and ServiceTitan 30% to 50% gross (September 2025). Then put the “from” prices on your website: “garage door repair pricing” is Googled about 6,600 times a month and “how much to charge for garage door installation” is put to AI assistants about 890 times (DataForSEO, October 2026).

RATES · NOVEMBER 2026
Garage door repair and installation prices (2026)
Typical US flat prices for repairs, a new door and the opener. The two repair rows are two publishers: Housecall Pro's are what companies charge, installed (March 2026); Fixr's are its replacement figures by part (January 2025). Where they overlap they agree — a torsion spring is $200–$500 at Housecall Pro and $200–$350 at Fixr, rollers $100–$250 and $100–$150. This Old House's average repair is $479, from $98 for one component to $860 for a major one, with a full overhaul at $371–$1,231 (May 2026). The door-by-material row is the door only: add the labor and the removal from the next table.

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price a garage door job
Six steps from the parts and the hours to the number on your price list.
Price the parts from the supplier
Springs, cables, rollers, a panel or the opener at your cost: ServiceTitan puts a premium belt-drive opener with a keypad at $400–$700 (September 2025); a chain-drive unit is $130–$200 and a belt-drive $170–$350 before labor (Fixr, January 2025).
Cost the labor at a loaded wage
A $30-an-hour technician costs about $45–$50 an hour once payroll taxes, insurance and benefits are loaded (ServiceTitan). Time the job: Fixr puts an opener install at 2–6 hours (January 2025).
Spread the overhead over the jobs
Monthly overhead ÷ jobs a month: ServiceTitan's $4,950 of rent, admin, software and training over 60 jobs is $82.50 a job (September 2025). That's the number a $100 roller job has to carry.
Add the margin
Break-even = labor + materials + overhead, then price = break-even ÷ (1 − target margin): Housecall Pro targets 25%–45% — 20%–40% in its step-by-step (March 2026) — and ServiceTitan 30%–50% gross (September 2025). Housecall Pro's spring replacement: $372 ÷ 0.70 = $531 at 30%.
Make it flat, with a service call
Residential repairs are flat-rate jobs and a full replacement is a project with parts and labor separated (Housecall Pro). The $75–$150 service call covers the drive and the diagnosis; This Old House's $50–$75 diagnostic is usually waived once the work is approved (May 2026).
Price after-hours work and the extras
After-hours labor at 1.5–2× standard and an emergency service call at $150–$300 (Housecall Pro); the old door's removal at $50–$200 and an opener added during an install at $100–$200 of labor (Fixr); the permit at $25–$100 or more (This Old House).
The formula, worked through
Say it's a torsion spring replacement on a double door. Housecall Pro's market range is $200–$500 (March 2026); Fixr's is $200–$350 (January 2025).
Housecall Pro's own worked example: the spring, the labor and the overhead come to $372 at break-even, and at a 30% target margin $372 ÷ 0.70 = $531 (March 2026). This Old House's sample invoice for a basic spring replacement is $360 — $108 of parts, $192 of labor and a $60 service call (May 2026).
So the same job prices at $360 on one page and $531 on the other: the gap is the margin and the overhead the first invoice doesn't show. $531 sits above Housecall Pro's $200–$500 table range but inside its $200–$600 overview figure — a top-of-market price, and what earns it (a same-day fix, a written warranty) is your call, not Housecall Pro's. The figures are the publishers'; the comparison is ours, and your parts cost, your wage and your drive are what make the price yours.
What to charge in your part of the country
The ranges on this page are US national figures, and labor is most of a repair bill — $192 of This Old House's $360 spring invoice (May 2026) — so the price moves with local wages. The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026): a $400 spring job in an average market is about $443 in California and about $348 in Arkansas.
In the US, a new door may need a building permit — $25–$100 or more (This Old House, May 2026), pulled by the installer and shown on the price as its own line — and whether a garage door company needs a state contractor licence is decided state by state; our guide to starting a garage door business covers the licences some states require. Check your city and your state contractor board before you price an installation.
Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — flat prices for the repairs you do every week, a service call for the trip, the door and the labor as separate lines on a replacement, and more for after-hours work hold everywhere — and check what local companies list on their own websites.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a garage door repair costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: spring replacement from $200, service calls from $75” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Garage door repair pricing: common questions
$150–$600, plus a $75–$150 service call (Housecall Pro, March 2026). By the job: rollers $100–$250, safety sensors $100–$250, track alignment $125–$300, cables $150–$350, a torsion spring $200–$500, an opener replacement $300–$800. This Old House's average repair is $479, in a $98–$860 range (May 2026); Fixr's is $150–$350, averaging $250 (January 2025). The calculator above prices any of them with the service call.
$200–$500 for a torsion spring (Housecall Pro, March 2026); Fixr puts torsion springs at $200–$350 and extension springs at $120–$250 (January 2025). Housecall Pro's worked example prices one at $531 — $372 of cost at a 30% margin — and This Old House's sample invoice comes to $360 (May 2026).
$800–$1,800 for a single-car door and $1,200–$2,500 or more for a double, installed (Housecall Pro, March 2026); a double-insulated door is $1,200–$3,500 and a custom wood door $2,500–$6,000 or more. Fixr prices the pieces: a 16-by-7 steel door $700–$3,500, vinyl $950–$2,500, wood $2,000–$6,000, the labor $100–$300 for a single and $375–$575 for a double, the old door's removal $50–$200 (January 2025).
$300–$600 installed, about $480 on average — 2–6 hours of labor at $65–$85 an hour on a $130–$350 chain- or belt-drive unit; replacing an old opener is $225–$450 (Fixr, January 2025). Housecall Pro's opener replacement is $300–$800 (March 2026). A battery backup adds $75–$175 and a keypad $40–$55 (Fixr).
$75–$100 an hour (Fixr, January 2025); This Old House puts the average at about $60 and the top at $150 or more (May 2026). Most companies price flat and use the hour as the check — ServiceTitan's loaded cost for a $30-an-hour technician is about $45–$50 an hour (September 2025), so a flat price has to clear that plus the overhead per job.
$75–$150 (Housecall Pro, March 2026), with a minimum service fee of $100–$200 so a small job still covers the trip and the diagnosis. This Old House's diagnostic visit is $50–$75, usually waived once the customer approves the repair (May 2026). An emergency service call is $150–$300, and after-hours labor runs 1.5–2× standard (Housecall Pro).
Housecall Pro targets 25%–45% (20%–40% in its step-by-step) and prices at break-even ÷ (1 − margin) (March 2026); ServiceTitan targets a 30%–50% gross margin and builds the overhead in per job — $4,950 a month over 60 jobs is $82.50 each (September 2025). Markup and margin aren't the same number: a 30% markup is a 23% margin.
Yes — a “from” price for a spring replacement and the service call fee answer the first question before the call, and they're the line an AI assistant can quote. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your prices, and change them when parts prices move.
