The short answer
Resizing a plain gold band a size or two costs $40 to $150; platinum runs $150 to $350 and a band with stones set into it $150 to $400 or more (Kate Rose Fine Jewelry, Santa Monica, August 2026). Its table: sizing down $40–$90, sizing up $60–$150, three or more sizes up with added metal $120–$300, platinum $150–$350, a band with stones in the shank $150–$400+, and sizing beads or a spring insert $40–$90. A second jeweler puts sizing smaller at $50–$150 and larger at $80–$250 (Theo Grace, February 2026).
A national chain prices its counter work as packages: $109 for a ring refresh, $199 to restore a fashion ring and $249 an engagement ring (sizing included), $399 and $489 to refurbish them (prongs retipped), $69 for a basic bracelet or necklace repair, $99 to refresh a chain, pendant or bracelet and $149 to restore one with a broken chain repaired (Jared's own price list, read November 2026).
For a handmade piece, the formula a jewelry school teaches is materials, packaging and any other costs times two, plus your time, for the wholesale price — and wholesale times 2.5 for retail, with an expensive or fragile gemstone's cost tripled in the sum (Cognac Jewellery School, October 2025). Its silver ring works out at $69 wholesale and $173 retail. The median jeweler earns $25.26 an hour (O*NET, 2025 wages), a floor for the time line.
Then put the prices on your website: “jewelry pricing” is Googled about 390 times a month and put to AI assistants about 2,200 times, and “ring resizing cost” is Googled about 5,400 times (DataForSEO, October 2026).

ADD-ONS AND ADJUSTMENTS
What a second piece adds
A chain, pendant or bracelet is its own package on the chain's list, so a second piece adds its own package price (Jared, read November 2026; the sum is ours).
| What | Typical US price · source |
|---|---|
| Chain, pendant or bracelet refresh, a second package | +$99 · Jared |
| Chain, pendant or bracelet restore (broken chain repaired), a second package | +$149 · Jared |

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price jewelry
Six steps from the bench to a price list — the handmade piece first, then the counter work.
Add up the costs
Metal, stones, findings, solder, polish, the box and the card — Cognac Jewellery School's example ring comes to $15 of materials and $3.25 of packaging (October 2025). Triple an expensive or fragile gemstone's cost in the sum, so a cracked stone doesn't eat the margin.
Double them, then add your time
Materials and packaging times two, plus your hours at your rate, is the wholesale price: ($15 + $3.25) × 2 + $32 of time = about $69 (Cognac). The median jeweler earns $25.26 an hour (O*NET, 2025 wages), a floor for the rate; design, consultation, finishing and admin count as time.
Multiply wholesale by 2.5 for retail
Retail is wholesale times 2.5 — $69 becomes about $173 (Cognac). Sell at retail on your own website and at wholesale to a shop, so the shop's price and yours match.
Price resizing by metal and stones
A plain gold band down a size or two is $40–$90, up $60–$150, three or more sizes up $120–$300, platinum $150–$350 and a band with stones in the shank $150–$400+ (Kate Rose, August 2026). The same ring is a different job in a different metal.
Bundle the counter work
A national chain sells its repairs as packages — $109 to refresh a ring, $199–$249 to restore one with the sizing in, $399–$489 to refurbish it with the prongs retipped (Jared). A package price is easier to say yes to than a list of line items.
Say what can't be done
An eternity band can't be resized and is usually remade (Kate Rose). Saying so on the list saves a trip to the counter.
The formula, worked through
Take a sterling silver ring with a cabochon stone. If the wire, sheet, bezel, stone and solder come to $15, the box and card to $3.25, and the ring takes an hour and a half, then at O*NET's median $25.26 an hour the time line is $37.89 (2025 wages). Doubling the $18.25 of costs and adding the time gives $74.39 wholesale; times 2.5 is $185.98 retail — close to the school's own $69 and $173 at its €20-an-hour rate (Cognac Jewellery School, October 2025).
On the counter side, a customer bringing in a gold ring to go up a size and a necklace with a broken chain is a $60–$150 resize at Kate Rose's figures (August 2026) and a $149 chain restore at Jared's — or $199 and $149 as the chain's two packages.
So “handmade rings from $185, resizing from $40, repairs from $69” is a fair first line for your price list. The formula and the figures are the publishers'; the ring's costs at the US median wage and the sums are ours.
What to charge where you work
Neither jeweler publishes a state table, and Kate Rose's figures are a Santa Monica shop's, so read them as a high-cost market's. The Bureau of Economic Analysis's 2024 regional price parities put California at 110.7 and Arkansas at 86.9 against a US average of 100 (released February 2026) — a resize that costs $100 in an average-priced market is about $111 in California and $87 in Arkansas. The metal itself is priced off the day's market, so a resize that adds gold moves with the gold price as well as the town.
In the US, how you describe the metal and the stones when you sell — the karat, plated or filled, lab-grown or natural — is covered by the Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides, and whether sales tax applies to a repair's labor as well as to a new piece is set state by state. Check your state's rules and confirm the tax line with your accountant.
Outside the US, treat the dollar figures as a shape, not a price: the costs doubled plus your time for wholesale, wholesale times 2.5 for retail, resizing by metal and stones and repairs as packages hold everywhere — and how a piece must be marked or hallmarked before it's sold is set by each country. Check what the jewelers near you publish.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what jewelry work costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: handmade rings from $185, ring resizing from $40, repairs from $69” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Jewelry pricing: common questions
Add up materials, packaging and other costs, double them and add your time at your hourly rate for the wholesale price; multiply wholesale by 2.5 for retail, and triple an expensive or fragile gemstone's cost in the sum (Cognac Jewellery School, October 2025). The calculator above shows the school's worked ring and the counter prices.
In the school's formula, costs are doubled for wholesale and wholesale is multiplied by 2.5 for retail — so the materials and packaging end up at five times their cost in the retail price, and your time at two and a half times (Cognac Jewellery School, October 2025; the arithmetic is ours).
$40–$150 for a plain gold band a size or two, $120–$300 for three or more sizes up with added metal, $150–$350 in platinum and $150–$400 or more with stones set into the band (Kate Rose Fine Jewelry, August 2026). A second jeweler puts sizing smaller at $50–$150 and larger at $80–$250 (Theo Grace, February 2026).
A national chain's packages are $69 for a basic bracelet or necklace repair, $109 to refresh a ring, $199–$249 to restore one with the sizing in and $399–$489 to refurbish it with the prongs retipped (Jared, read November 2026). Price your own from your bench time and the metal each job uses.
The median employed jeweler earns $25.26 an hour, $52,540 a year (O*NET, 2025 wages); a jeweler working for themselves charges above that, because the bench, the tools, the insurance and the unbilled hours are theirs. In the school's formula your time is added at your own rate.
It takes more time and specialized tools (Theo Grace, February 2026) — $150–$350 against $40–$150 for a plain gold band (Kate Rose, August 2026).
Yes — a retail price on each piece and a from-price for resizing and repairs answers the first question before the visit, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your prices, and change them when the metal price moves.
