Leaving Wix: cancel your plan and move your domain without losing your site or email
Your Wix plan, your domain and a business email bought through Wix are three separate subscriptions, and cancelling one doesn't cancel the others. Here's the order that keeps your site and email running, each step in Wix's own words, plus what's refundable and what you can take with you.

The short answer
To leave Wix without your site or email going dark, do it in this order: get the new site ready while the Wix site is still live, save what you can take with you, point or transfer your domain, settle your business email, and let the Wix plan run out last. Cancelling the plan only turns its renewal off, and Wix keeps it running to the end of the period you've paid for, so cancel before the renewal charge, which comes up to 3 weeks early on a yearly plan. The exception is a first plan cancelled within 14 days: Wix refunds it and ends it at once, so point your domain at the new site before you do. Cancelling the plan doesn't cancel a domain or a business email bought through Wix, and under Wix's own terms neither is refundable; check your local rules too.
Every step below was read on Wix's help centre, in US English, on 5 November 2026, and the menu names are Wix's own. Wix changes its menus from time to time; if a button has moved, the help page linked beside each step has the current one.
The order matters because the pieces lean on each other. Your domain sends visitors to a site and routes your email, using settings called DNS records. Move the domain without those records, or let the Wix plan end while the domain still shows the Wix site, and that's when a website or an inbox goes quiet.
Leaving Wix, one line each
- Three subscriptions, not one: the site plan, a domain bought from Wix and a business email bought through Wix are each cancelled on their own, from Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account.
- Refunds: under Wix's own terms, a first-time Premium or Studio plan cancelled within 14 days is refunded in full (and ends at once); renewals, upgrades, domains and Google Workspace bought through Wix are not. Check your local rules too.
- Early charges: Wix takes a yearly plan's renewal up to 3 weeks before it expires, and a domain's or business email's 30 days before.
- Cancelling isn't switching off: cancelling a plan outside its first 14 days only stops the renewal; the plan runs to the end of what you've paid.
- Your site after the plan ends: it stays online at a free wixsite.com address with Wix ads until you unpublish it; the content isn't deleted.
- The domain: point it at the new site from Wix (changes can take up to 48 hours) or transfer it away (up to 7 days, with the 60-day locks Wix lists), and after a transfer put every website and email record in again at the new domain company.
- The email: it's tied to the domain, not the site, so it keeps working after the plan ends; to leave Wix it can only move to Google Workspace, through Wix Customer Care.
THE SAFE ORDER
Six steps to leave Wix, with the plan running out last
Do them in this order and there's no day when your site or your email is missing.
Get the new site ready first
Build it while your Wix site is still live at your own domain, so you can copy from it and nothing goes dark.
Save what you can take with you
Wix can't back a site up outside Wix. Download the photos and videos you uploaded, export contacts and products, and copy any words you want to keep.
Turn off the plan's renewal in time
In Premium Subscriptions, note when the plan, the domain and any business email renew: Wix charges a yearly plan up to 3 weeks early, a domain or business email 30 days early. Cancelling the plan only stops the renewal; it keeps running to the end of what you've paid. In your first 14 days, though, cancelling ends it at once, so do step 4 first.
Point or transfer the domain
Point it at the new site from Wix's DNS settings (changes can take up to 48 hours), or transfer it to another domain company (up to 7 days). Copy every DNS record first: after a transfer, the website and email records all go in again at the new company.
Settle the email
A Google Workspace mailbox bought through Wix keeps working and renewing after the plan ends. Keep paying Wix for it, or ask Wix Customer Care to move it to Google.
Let the Wix plan run out last
Once the domain shows the new site and email arrives, unpublish the old Wix site so it doesn't stay online at its free Wix address, and cancel anything still renewing that you no longer need.
WHAT YOU'RE PAYING WIX FOR
What happens to each Wix subscription when you leave
Look in Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account and you'll see each of these listed on its own line, with its own renewal date.
| Subscription | Cancelled with the plan? | Refund | When Wix charges the renewal | After you cancel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site plan (Premium or Studio) | This is the plan | 14 days, first-time purchases only; not renewals or upgrades | Monthly plans on the expiry date; yearly and multi-year plans up to 3 weeks before it | Stays active to the end of the period (ends at once if cancelled inside the 14 days) |
| Domain bought from Wix | No, cancelled separately | Non-refundable | 30 days before it expires | Yours to the end of the period, then about 30 days' grace (none for some endings) |
| Business email (Google Workspace) bought through Wix | No, cancelled separately | Non-refundable | 30 days before it expires | Email works to the end of the period |
From Wix's pages on refunds, billing, domains and business email, read 5 November 2026. Paid apps are cancelled on their own too, and renew on their expiry date. Anything bought during a sale "renews at the standard rate", Wix says. These are Wix's own terms, as its help centre states them. Consumer law where you live, in the US, the UK, the EU, Australia or elsewhere, can add rights of its own, so check your local rules, or ask Wix, before you count on a refund.
Before you change anything: save what you can take with you
Wix is plain about it: "Currently, it is not possible to back up your site externally." Its Site History and site duplicates live inside your Wix account (Wix Help). There's no file you can download and open somewhere else, so a move off Wix means rebuilding the site and carrying across what you can:
- Photos and videos: "Only images and videos that you have uploaded can be downloaded. Free Wix and Shutterstock media cannot be downloaded." There's no one-click download of everything; you select files folder by folder in the Media Manager (Wix Help).
- Contacts: "You can export up to 50,000 site contacts at once to a CSV file", from Contacts in your site's dashboard (Wix Help).
- Store products: physical products export to a CSV file with their data; "Exporting digital products is not currently supported." (Wix Help).
- Your words: with no site file to download, the text on your pages and posts comes across by copying it into a document, or by letting the new builder read it from the live site (see the end of this guide).
Do this while your plan is active and the site is live at your own domain. Nothing is deleted when the plan ends, but the site drops back to a free Wix address and loses premium features, and you'll want the live site in front of you while the new one comes together.
How to transfer your domain from Wix, or point it instead
If you bought your domain from Wix, you have two ways to move it to the new site. Both keep the address your customers already know.
Option 1: keep the domain at Wix and point it. Wix lets you "connect a domain purchased from Wix to any site, even if it's hosted on another platform" by editing its DNS records (Wix Help). Go to Domains in your Wix account, click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain, and select Manage DNS Records. Your new host gives you the records to add: usually an A record (it sends your domain to the new site) and a www record, and some hosts also ask for a TXT record that proves you own the domain. Where Wix already has an A or www record, change it to the new value rather than adding a second one; add a TXT record beside the ones already there, and never delete or replace existing MX or TXT records, because your email uses them. for A and www records, Wix says old ones should be deleted "to avoid a conflict between records". Wix's page says changes "can take up to 48 hours to fully update across the internet". You keep paying Wix for the domain, but it's the quickest route, and if you only change the A and www records (and add any TXT record), your email records (called MX records) stay as they are.
One exception: if your new host asks you to change the domain's nameservers instead, Wix says "your domain stays registered with Wix, but Wix no longer manages your domain's DNS", so your email records then have to be set up again at the new host too.
Option 2: transfer it away from Wix. This moves the domain to another domain company (a registrar). Wix says that afterwards its "DNS settings, and renewal payments are all managed in your new provider's account". In Wix's steps (Wix Help):
- Go to Domains in your Wix account.
- Click the Domain Actions icon next to the relevant domain.
- Select Transfer away from Wix.
- Click Transfer Domain, then I Still Want to Transfer. Wix emails the transfer code (Wix calls it the authorization or EPP code) to the domain's registrant contact email address, the owner's email on the domain's record.
- Give the code to your new registrar and follow its transfer steps.
Wix's page adds four things to know. "Your domain must be unlocked before you begin the transfer." It recommends turning off Private Registration first so you don't miss the transfer emails. "A domain transfer usually takes up to 7 days to complete." And once it's done, "your Wix site is disconnected".
The records don't come with it. Wix's transfer page says business email won't work afterwards until you add the MX records again. And since the new company then runs your DNS, the records that send visitors to your new site have to be there too. Before you start, copy every record on Wix's Manage DNS Records page. Then either set the new site's records and the email records up at the new company before the transfer completes, if it lets you, or add them the moment it does.
When you can't transfer yet. Wix's page lists ICANN's rules this way: "You cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of purchase." "Changing your registrant contact information locks your domain from transfer for 60 days." And a transfer locks the domain from moving again for 60 days. So a domain bought in the last 60 days can't be transferred yet: point it instead. A .uk or .co.uk domain moves by changing a setting called its IPS tag instead of with a code. ICANN's own registrant FAQ also gives a registrar five calendar days to hand over the code once you ask (ICANN).
Which to choose. Point the domain if you want the new site live this week and don't mind Wix billing the domain for now; you can still transfer it later, at your own pace. Transfer it when you want nothing left on Wix, after the new site is ready. Either way, copy every record on the Manage DNS Records page before you change anything: your website and your email depend on them.
Don't let it lapse. If a Wix domain expires, it enters a grace period of "approximately 30 days", but Wix says its registrar "has the right to privately auction the domain within the last 10 days of the grace period", and some endings (.de, .fr, .nl, .me and others) have no grace period at all (Wix Help). Move or renew a domain you care about before its expiry date, not after.
Your business email: the step most guides skip
If you bought a Google Workspace mailbox through Wix, it's a separate subscription, and leaving the site doesn't touch it. Wix's words: "Cancelling your Wix plan or deleting your site does not cancel your Google Workspace subscription. Your business email remains active, and your subscription will continue to renew automatically until you cancel it." (Wix Help). That's because "Your business email is connected to your domain, not your site." (Wix Help).
So the site plan can end without your email noticing. What can break it is the domain:
- Transferring the domain. Wix's transfer page asks whether business email will work after transferring and answers: "No. You need to add the MX records again after the transfer in order for the business email to work." MX records are the settings that route your email. Copy them (and any other email records on the Manage DNS Records page) before you start, and add them at the new company as soon as the transfer completes.
- Pointing the domain means changing the A and www records (and adding any TXT record your new host asks for), so leave the MX records and the existing TXT records exactly as they are. (Changing nameservers is different: see the domain section above.)
To move the email off Wix, Wix says it "can only transfer it to Google Workspace", and you start by contacting Wix Customer Care. "This is an irreversible action. Once transferred to Google, you cannot repurchase the business email through Wix." On Google's side, the account's main admin (Google calls it a super administrator) finishes it in the Google Admin console, under Account, then Reseller management. Google's page adds that "If you have an email-verified Business edition, you need to verify ownership of your domain before transferring", and says "Transfers don't affect your data or availability." (Google Workspace Admin Help). So you don't need a new Google account or to copy your mail across: the subscription moves, and Google bills you instead of Wix.
If you'd rather stop using the email, cancel it from Premium Subscriptions like the plan. It works until the end of the billing period, and "Google Workspace business emails purchased through Wix are non-refundable." (Wix Help). Save anything you need from the mailbox first.
How to cancel your Wix subscription
Wix's steps (Wix Help):
- Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account.
- Click the More Actions icon next to the relevant plan.
- Click Cancel Plan.
- Click Cancel Now to confirm.
"This does not cancel your plan immediately. Your plan will remain active until the end of the current subscription period. At that time, the plan will not renew." If you change your mind before then, turning auto-renewal back on undoes it.
When to cancel. Because cancelling only stops the renewal, you can do it as soon as you've decided to leave, as long as it's before the renewal charge. What has to come last is the day the plan actually ends: by then the domain should already show your new site. The one exception is your first 14 days, below.
What happens to the old site. "If you cancel your plan, your site is still active and can be viewed online." Its address "reverts to the free Wix URL (siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress)" and Wix ads appear. Wix says you must unpublish it or hide it from search results if you don't want it online, so do that once the new site is live, or you'll have two versions of your business on the internet.
Refunds. "Studio and Premium plans come with a 14 day refund period for first time purchases. If you cancel your plan within this period, your plan ends immediately and you'll receive a full refund." "The refund policy does not apply to renewals or cancellations after the 14 day period", and not to upgrades either (Wix Help). Refunds can take up to 45 business days. Note the word immediately: a refunded plan stops at once, including the connection to your own domain, so if the domain still shows the Wix site, point it at the new one first. Outside the 14 days, Wix says "contact us and we'll review your request". Domains bought from Wix are "non-refundable and do not include a 14 day trial period" (Wix Help; Wix's domain refund policy says the same).
Then the domain. Cancelling the plan leaves the domain renewing, because "Your site plan (Premium or Studio plan) and domain name are separate services and therefore need to be canceled separately." (Wix Help). If you transferred it, Wix says its renewal payments are then managed by the new company. If you pointed it and want to keep it, leave it renewing. If you don't need it, open the domain's More Actions menu in Premium Subscriptions, click Cancel domain, then Cancel auto renew and Submit; you keep it until its period ends.
Mind the renewal dates. Wix takes a renewal before the period ends: on the expiry date for monthly plans, "Up to 3 weeks prior to your plan's expiration date" for yearly and multi-year plans, and 30 days early for domains and business email. Anything bought on a sale "renews at the standard rate" (Wix Help). Cancel before the charge date, not just before the expiry date.
Closing the account is a separate, last step, and Wix warns it "can't be undone. You lose access to your account and everything in it." It also "stops billing for the premium subscriptions managed by this account", so a domain or email you've kept at Wix would stop renewing: transfer the domain away and move the email to Google first if you're keeping them, and remove any domains you connected from elsewhere, as Wix's steps ask. You don't need to close the account to stop paying; cancelling each subscription is enough (Wix Help).
These are Wix's own terms, as its help centre states them. Consumer law where you live, in the US, the UK, the EU, Australia or elsewhere, can add rights of its own, so check your local rules, or ask Wix, before you count on a refund.
Leaving Wix: common questions
Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account, click the More Actions icon next to the plan, click Cancel Plan, then Cancel Now. Outside your first 14 days, that only turns the renewal off: the plan stays active until the end of the period you've paid for, so make sure your domain shows your new site before that date. Inside the first 14 days, cancelling refunds the plan and ends it at once, including the connection to your own domain, so if your domain still shows the Wix site, point it at the new site first. Steps read on Wix's help centre on 5 November 2026.
Only for a first-time Premium or Studio plan cancelled within 14 days; that plan ends immediately, including the connection to your own domain, and Wix refunds it in full, which can take up to 45 business days. So if your domain still shows the Wix site, point it at the new site before you cancel. Renewals, upgrades, domains and Google Workspace bought through Wix aren't refundable under Wix's policy, though Wix says it will review other requests. These are Wix's own terms, as its help centre states them. Consumer law where you live, in the US, the UK, the EU, Australia or elsewhere, can add rights of its own, so check your local rules, or ask Wix, before you count on a refund.
No. Wix treats the plan and a domain bought from Wix as separate services, cancelled separately. If you only cancel the plan, the domain keeps renewing, and a business email bought through Wix keeps renewing too.
It stays online with its content until you unpublish it, but at a free wixsite.com address with Wix ads, and without premium features such as your own domain. Nothing is deleted when the plan ends.
In your Wix account, go to Domains, click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain, select Transfer away from Wix, click Transfer Domain and then I Still Want to Transfer. Wix emails the EPP code to the domain's registrant contact. Enter that code in the new company's transfer form (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare or any other). The domain must be unlocked and outside the 60-day locks Wix lists. Copy every record on Wix's Manage DNS Records page first: once the transfer completes, the new company runs your DNS, and Wix says email won't work until the MX records are added again; the records for your website go in again too.
Wix says a domain transfer usually takes up to 7 days to complete. If you need the new site live sooner, point the domain at it from Wix's DNS settings first, which Wix says can take up to 48 hours, and transfer it afterwards.
Not because the site plan ends: a business email is connected to the domain, not the site, and keeps renewing until you cancel it. It stops working if you transfer the domain and don't add its MX records again at the new company, if you change the domain's nameservers without setting the email records up again at the new host, or if you close your Wix account (or let the domain lapse) while the email or domain is still billed there. Copy your DNS records before you start.
Usually because only the site plan was cancelled: a domain, a business email and paid apps are separate subscriptions that renew on their own. Wix also charges early: up to 3 weeks before expiry for yearly plans, and 30 days before for domains and business email. Check Premium Subscriptions and Billing History in your Wix account.
Not as a whole site. Wix says it isn't possible to back your site up outside Wix. You can download the photos and videos you uploaded, export contacts and physical products to CSV files, and copy your text; the design and pages are rebuilt on the new platform.
Cancel or transfer each subscription first, remove any domains you connected from elsewhere, move your sites to Trash or transfer them, then close the account from Wix's Close your Wix account page. Closing stops billing for everything the account manages and can't be undone, so transfer a domain you're keeping and move a business email to Google before you close. You don't need to close the account just to stop paying.

Before you cancel: let the new builder read the live site
Because Wix has no whole-site export, the quickest way to carry your words and photos across is a builder that reads your site from its address while it's still live. Hostinger's AI Website Cloner does that: it recreates a site "as an editable site you can build on", which its page calls "a close starting point, not a pixel-perfect duplicate", free to start and a paid plan to publish (Hostinger).
Zarla does that too. Paste your Wix site's address and it rebuilds your pages, words and photos in a new design, with booking, quotes and invoices on the website plan. It reads the live site, so do it in step 1, before you point the domain away or unpublish anything. It's free to see and edit; you pay when you publish, on Premium. When you're ready for step 4, our help page shows how to point a Wix domain at your Zarla site. Bring your Wix site across, or read Wix vs Zarla, head to head first.
Bring your Wix site across before you cancel
Paste your Wix site's address while it's still live, or describe your business in one line, and Zarla builds the new site: pages, words, photos and booking. Free to build and preview; you pay only when you publish.
Already have a website? Bring it across →Zarla keeps your old page addresses where it can and redirects the ones that change, helping you keep the Google standing you've built.
