The short answer

A private chef dinner costs $169 a guest on average in the US, commonly $145 to $200 — about $210 a head for two guests down to $150 for eleven or more, with menu planning, groceries, cooking, service and cleanup included (Take a Chef, September 2026). Miummium's 2026 average is $76 a person, and $400 to $2,000 for a dinner of eight, $608 on average.

By the clock: $50 to $150 an hour for a personal chef's labor with groceries billed separately, or $400 to $700 a day (Miummium); Fash's hourly band is $50 to $200, with $250 to $1,400 for a five- to seven-hour dinner, and $200 to $500 a day; BreakingAC's is $50 to $100 an hour and $150 to $500 and up for a private dinner for two to six (February 2026).

Regular work is priced by the visit and the month: weekly meal prep $150 to $400 a visit for 10 to 12 servings plus groceries (BreakingAC; Miummium's weekly labor is the same $150 to $400), a chef visiting two or three times a week $2,500 to $4,000 a month all-in (Miummium), a full-time private chef $5,000 to $10,000 a month or $60,000 to $120,000 a year (Fash). Groceries run $50 to $300 for a dinner (Fash) and $65 to $200 a week (BreakingAC).

Price the dinner per guest with the groceries inside it or the hours with the groceries outside — never both ways on one menu — then put “from” prices on your website: “private chef rates” is Googled about 260 times a month, and “how much to charge as a private chef” is put to AI assistants about 280 times (DataForSEO, October 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price a private chef booking

Six steps from the menu to the number on the price list.

01

Decide where the groceries go

Per-guest marketplace prices include the shop — $150–$210 a head on Take a Chef; hourly and daily rates don't — $50–$150 an hour plus groceries (Miummium). Pick one model per menu line and say it.

02

Count every hour, not the dinner

Menu planning, the shop, prep, the drive, cooking, service and cleanup — a dinner for eight is a full day. Fash puts five to seven hours of work at $250–$1,400; Miummium's day rate is $400–$700.

03

Price the dinner per guest

Take a Chef's price falls as the table grows — $210 a head for two, $150 for eleven or more — because your time is shared across it. A per-guest price with a minimum spend protects the small table.

04

Cost the menu per course

Groceries run $50–$300 for a dinner (Fash); a seven-course tasting menu and a three-course family dinner can't carry the same per-guest price. Price the courses and the ingredient grade, and name them on the menu.

05

Price regular clients by the visit

Weekly meal prep is $150–$400 a visit for 10–12 servings plus $65–$200 of groceries (BreakingAC); two or three visits a week is $2,500–$4,000 a month all-in (Miummium). A standing client earns a lower hourly rate for a guaranteed week.

06

Check it against the hour

Divide the dinner's price by its hours: a $1,232 dinner for eight (Take a Chef's $154 a head) over about ten hours of work is $123 an hour before the groceries inside it — within Miummium's $50–$150 once the shop is taken out.

The formula, worked through

Say a three-course dinner for six, priced per guest with the groceries inside.

At Take a Chef's $150–$210 a head, six guests is $900–$1,260 — its own figure for five or six guests is $165 a head, $990. Priced the other way, the same evening is about seven hours at $50–$150 an hour (Miummium), $350–$1,050, plus $50–$300 of groceries (Fash): $400–$1,350.

Both roads land in the same place, so “private dinners from $150 a guest, weekly meal prep from $150 a visit” is a fair line for your website — with the groceries inside the first and outside the second, and both saying so. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.

What to charge in your part of the country

BreakingAC says rates sit at the top of each range in premium markets like Miami, Palm Beach and New York (February 2026); across the US, Take a Chef's typical figure is $169 a guest, commonly $145–$200, and the table size moves the price more than the state does (September 2026).

The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so a $165-a-guest dinner in an average market is about $180 in California and about $145 in Arkansas.

In the US, cooking in a client's home usually needs a food handler card and liability cover, and selling meals you prepare in your own kitchen falls under your state's cottage-food law and the county health department's rules, which set what you may sell and where. Check your state and county rules before the menu goes up.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a private chef costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: private dinners from $150 a guest, dinner parties from $400, weekly meal prep from $150 a visit, monthly chef service from $2,500” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Private chef rates: common questions

How much should I charge per person as a private chef?

$169 a guest on average on Take a Chef's US marketplace, commonly $145–$200 — $210 a head for one or two guests, $175 for three or four, $165 for five or six, $154 for seven to ten, $150 for eleven or more, with the groceries, service and cleanup included (September 2026). Miummium's 2026 average is $76 a person for a personal chef. The calculator above uses the Take a Chef band.

How much do private chefs charge per hour?

$50–$150 an hour for labor with groceries billed separately (Miummium, 2026); $50–$200 for a one-time dinner party (Fash, April 2024); $50–$100 (BreakingAC, February 2026). A chef with Michelin-kitchen experience commands the top; a part-time chef new to private dining sits near $50.

How much should I charge for a dinner party?

$400–$2,000 for a dinner of eight, $608 on average (Miummium, 2026); $150–$500+ for a private dinner for two to six (BreakingAC, February 2026); $250–$1,400 for five to seven hours of a chef's time before groceries (Fash). Priced per guest, $154 a head for seven to ten guests is about $1,232 for eight (Take a Chef).

What should I charge for weekly meal prep?

$150–$400 a visit for 10–12 servings plus groceries (BreakingAC, February 2026) — Miummium's weekly labor band is the same $150–$400; most families pay $250–$500 a week all-in (BreakingAC). Fash's personal-chef band is $200–$750 a week.

How much is a monthly retainer or a full-time private chef?

$2,500–$4,000 a month for a chef who visits two or three times a week (Miummium, 2026); a full-time private chef $5,000–$10,000 a month, $60,000–$120,000 a year (Fash, April 2024); $80,000–$150,000 a year in BreakingAC's 2026 figures.

Should groceries be in the price?

Either way works, but say which: Take a Chef's per-guest prices include them; Miummium's hourly and Fash's day rates don't, with groceries at $50–$300 for a dinner (Fash) and $65–$200 a week for meal prep (BreakingAC). Never put a per-guest price with groceries inside and an hourly rate without them on the same line.

Is a private chef cheaper than a restaurant?

For a group, usually: a dinner party for eight is about $1,232 with a private chef against $1,200–$1,600 for a restaurant private dining room before drinks and a tip; for two people the two land close together (Take a Chef, September 2026). It's a selling line for your website — the comparison, not the discount.

Should I put my prices on my website?

Yes — a “from $150 a guest” line for dinners and a per-visit price for meal prep answer the first question before the inquiry. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your rates, and change them when your menu does.
