The short answer

Tree removal costs $385 to $1,070 for most trees, with a national average of $850 — about $9.50 to $14.50 per foot of height (Lawn Love, October 2026). By height: $285–$435 up to 30 feet, $435–$870 for 30–60 feet, $870–$1,160 for 60–80 feet and $1,160–$2,000 over 80 feet. HomeGuide's range is $400–$1,200, also averaging $850, and $100–$400 or more an hour where companies bill by the hour (February 2026).

Trimming runs $412–$612 per tree on average: $80–$420 under 30 feet, $210–$790 for 30–60 feet and $470–$1,840 above 60 (Lawn Love, October 2026). Stump grinding is $2–$5 per inch of diameter, $180–$525 for most stumps and $330 on average (Lawn Love, December 2025). A fallen tree is $90–$300 to clear; an emergency removal $450–$3,000 (Lawn Love).

Housecall Pro's 2026 ranges from Angi's consumer data agree: $150–$450 under 30 feet, $450–$1,200 for 30–60, $800–$1,500 for 60–80 and $1,000–$2,000 or more over 80, with trimming at $75–$1,800 and the first stump $195–$600 (August 2026); Jobber's average is $750 a tree in a $200–$2,000 range (February 2026). Same-day work runs two to three times the standard rate, and several trees in one visit earn a 10%–25% discount per tree (HomeGuide).

Tree companies target margins of 10%–20%, with smaller operators pricing routine trimming closer to 20%–30% (Housecall Pro); Jobber's rule is 20% or higher. Price the height, add the stump, the haul-away and the risk — then put “from” prices on your website, because the homeowner with a leaning oak calls the first company that gives them a number.

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price a tree job

Six steps from the walk-around to the number on your website.

01

Walk the site first

Height, trunk diameter, condition, access, the drop zone, power lines and structures (Housecall Pro, August 2026; Jobber, February 2026). Trees over 24 inches in diameter cost significantly more to remove (HomeGuide).

02

Price the height

$9.50–$14.50 per foot: $285–$435 up to 30 feet, $435–$870 for 30–60, $870–$1,160 for 60–80, $1,160–$2,000 over 80 (Lawn Love, October 2026). The per-foot rate is the number your website can carry.

03

Add the stump and the cleanup

Stump grinding $2–$5 per inch of diameter, $180–$525 for most stumps (Lawn Love, December 2025); hauling debris $100–$200, log splitting $75–$100 a tree, chipping $75–$125 an hour (Lawn Love). Price each as its own line so the customer can drop one.

04

Price the risk

Work near power lines runs $1,500–$10,000 or more and emergency storm removal $450–$6,000 or more (Housecall Pro, from Angi's data). Jobber's rule: the higher the liability and the skill, the higher the margin.

05

Set the margin

Tree companies target 10%–20%, smaller operators 20%–30% on routine trimming (Housecall Pro); Jobber's rule is 20% or higher. Housecall Pro's example: a $575 baseline cost plus 30% — $173, which it calls the margin, though added to cost it is a markup — is $748, plus $125 for the stump, $873 in all.

06

Adjust for the calendar and the count

Same-day or next-day work runs two to three times the standard rate; summer and fall carry 10%–20% higher prices; several trees in one visit earn 10%–25% off per tree (HomeGuide, February 2026).

The formula, worked through

Say a 40-foot maple in good condition, in an open backyard, with the stump ground and the debris hauled.

40 feet at $9.50–$14.50 a foot (Lawn Love) is $380–$580 for the removal; Lawn Love's own band for a 30-to-60-foot tree is $435–$870, so a dense crown or a tight drop zone takes the quote to the band's floor or above. A 24-inch stump at $2–$5 an inch adds $48–$120 — or $115–$330 on Lawn Love's size table, the safer quote for a big hardwood stump — and hauling the debris $100–$200: about $530–$900 in all at the per-inch rate, up to about $1,100 with the table's stump price.

Housecall Pro's own example prices a removal from the cost side: $575 of crew, equipment and disposal plus 30% ($173 — it calls that the margin; added to cost it is a markup, and the margin on the price is 23%), $748 for the removal and $125 for the stump, $873 total — the same neighbourhood. So “tree removal from $9.50 a foot, stump grinding from $2 an inch” is a fair line for your website. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.

What to charge in your state

Jobber reports Angi's 2025 state ranges for a tree removal: California $650–$1,300, Florida $750–$1,500, New York $750–$1,100, North Carolina $600–$900, Washington $550–$800, Illinois $535–$730, Colorado $350–$650, Texas $300–$850 and Washington, DC $250–$700 (February 2026). Lawn Love's trimming averages by city run from $390–$579 in Portland, Maine to $493–$731 in Boston (October 2026).

Across all prices, the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026). Urban crews charge more than rural ones for the same tree — tighter drop zones, more risk, more traffic control (HomeGuide).

In the US, some cities require a permit to remove a tree — $60–$150 (Jobber), or $60–$320 for a stump where one is needed (Lawn Love) — and protected or heritage trees carry their own rules; check your city's ordinance before you quote the job, and put the fee on the price list as its own line. Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape — price per foot, stumps per inch, extras as lines — and check what local tree companies list on their own websites.

Tree removal pricing: common questions

How much should I charge to remove a tree?

$9.50–$14.50 per foot of height: $285–$435 up to 30 feet, $435–$870 for 30–60 feet, $870–$1,160 for 60–80 feet and $1,160–$2,000 over 80 feet, averaging $850 (Lawn Love, October 2026). HomeGuide's range is $400–$1,200 and Jobber's average $750. The calculator above works it out from the height.

How much should I charge for tree trimming?

$412–$612 per tree on average: $80–$420 under 30 feet, $210–$790 for 30–60 feet and $470–$1,840 above 60 feet (Lawn Love, October 2026). Housecall Pro's range from Angi's data is $75–$1,800, with palm trimming at $125–$800 (August 2026).

How much should I charge for stump grinding?

$2–$5 per inch of diameter as a rule of thumb, with most stumps at $180–$525 and a $330 average (Lawn Love, December 2025). Lawn Love's size table runs higher than the per-inch rule for big stumps — $45–$70 for a 6-inch stump but $115–$330 for 24 inches and $420–$700 for 48 — so quote the table for a large hardwood stump. Extra stumps on the same visit run $45–$100 each; hauling the stump and its roots away $2–$3 an inch.

How much more should I charge for emergency tree removal?

Same-day or next-day removal runs two to three times the standard rate (HomeGuide, February 2026); Lawn Love puts an emergency removal at $450–$3,000 and Housecall Pro storm-damage work at $450–$6,000 or more. The multiple pays for the crew you pulled off another job and the risk of a tree that's already failing.

Should I charge by the hour or by the tree?

Most quote flat by the tree; where companies bill hourly it's $100–$400 or more an hour for the crew and equipment (HomeGuide, February 2026). Housecall Pro's common models are a flat rate per tree, hourly for the crew and equipment, a per-acre or per-job bid, and recurring contracts for scheduled maintenance — flat for the straightforward tree, hourly where the variables could run away (Jobber).

What profit margin should a tree service target?

10%–20%, with smaller operators pricing routine residential trimming closer to 20%–30% to cover lower job volume, and crane or utility work at the top of the range or above (Housecall Pro, August 2026). Jobber's rule is 20% or higher (February 2026).

Should I discount for several trees at once?

Companies typically take 10%–25% off per tree when they're already on site with the crew and equipment (HomeGuide, February 2026). Clearing by the acre runs $850–$6,000 (Lawn Love) or $1,200–$8,000 (HomeGuide), depending on how heavily wooded the land is.

Should I put my tree service prices on my website?

Yes — a per-foot removal rate, a trimming range by size and a per-inch stump price. “Tree removal pricing” is searched nearly ten thousand times a month on Google in the US (DataForSEO, October 2026), and a company that prints its rate looks like the one with nothing to hide. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your prices, and change them each season.
