The short answer

Two clinics' published price lists put an exam at $59–$89: $59 at one Tampa clinic, and $79 at one Phoenix-area group's Avondale clinic against $89 at its two Phoenix locations (read November 2026) — one group's and one clinic's fees, not a national figure. The same Phoenix group charges $99–$129 for an urgent-care or weekend exam and $119–$149 for a weekend urgent exam.

Banfield's estimator puts a dog's office visit at $45.95 in El Paso, $49.95 in nine of the 25 cities it was checked in, and $73.95 in San Francisco (Ollie, March 2025).

Procedures, from the Phoenix group's list: core dog vaccines $41–$44 each (the Tampa clinic: $36.95 for DA2PP, $39 for rabies), a heartworm/tick test $69–$74, a spay or neuter package $550–$650 ($750–$850 for a dog over 50 lbs) with anesthesia, IV fluids, pain medication and an e-collar included — against Banfield's 25-city averages of $460.30 for a spay and $403.55 for a neuter (Ollie, March 2025) — a dental cleaning with anesthesia and X-rays $650, extractions from $160. The Tampa clinic starts X-rays at $199 for three views (interpretation not included) and ultrasound at $467 (after a $110 pre-exam).

Pet insurer Pumpkin's claims show what owners pay overall: an average routine visit of $229 for dogs and $197 for cats (Pumpkin, claims 2022–2025), and an average emergency bill of $653 for dogs and $919 for cats.

ADD-ONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

What the city adds, and the small services

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to set veterinary fees

Six steps from the cost of the team's time to a fee schedule clients can read.

01

Cost the doctor's hour first

Veterinarians' 2025 median pay is $62.55 an hour (O*NET). Add your technicians, supplies and premises to get the cost of an exam room for an hour — the base every other fee builds on.

02

Add a margin you can live on

Most small animal practices target net margins of 10%–15%, so a service that costs $60 to deliver sells for $66 at 10% (Weave). Price = cost × (1 + margin).

03

Set the exam fee, then anchor everything to it

Published exam fees: $59 at one Tampa clinic, $79–$89 at one Phoenix-area group, $45.95–$73.95 for Banfield's office visit by city. The exam is the price clients compare first.

04

Charge for the hour of the week

The Phoenix group adds $20–$40 for urgent care and weekend exams ($79–$89 to $99–$129) and $40–$60 for weekend urgent exams ($119–$149).

05

Sell procedures as packages

A spay or neuter package that names what's in it — anesthesia, IV fluids, pain medication, an e-collar, and pre-op bloodwork for dog neuters (the Phoenix group) — reads as one price, not a surprise bill.

06

Benchmark, then review twice a year

The AAHA Veterinary Fee Reference draws on over 950 practices and more than 500 services; use it with local competitors' prices, review fees semiannually and audit the structure at least yearly (Weave).

The formula, worked through

One visit on the Phoenix group's list. An exam at its Avondale clinic ($79), three core dog vaccines at $41 each ($123) and a heartworm, tick and Lyme test ($69) add up to $271. At its Phoenix clinics the same visit is $89 + $132 + $74 = $295. These are fees, not a recommendation — what a pet needs is the vet's call.

Against the insurers' average. Pumpkin's claims put an average routine visit at $229 for dogs and $197 for cats (2022–2025) — so the Phoenix visit above, with three vaccines and a test, runs 18%–29% above the average dog's routine bill. Price the exam and each line so the total reads fairly against what owners already pay.

Pricing a new service. If a service costs $60 to deliver once the team's time is counted, Weave's 10% margin makes it $66 and a 15% margin $69. The arithmetic is ours; the fees are the clinics' and the publishers'.

What to charge in your part of the country

Banfield's office visit for a dog, by city (Ollie, March 2025): $73.95 in San Francisco, $66.95 in San Jose, $63.95 in San Diego, $61.95 in Los Angeles, $58.95 in New York, Seattle, Boston and Washington, D.C., $49.95 in nine cities including Houston, Phoenix, Dallas and Denver, and $45.95 in El Paso. Across all prices, the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — a $79 exam in an average market is about $87 in California and about $69 in Arkansas.

Tax on what you sell. In the US, whether sales tax applies to the food, medicines and products a clinic sells — and to which services — is set state by state; confirm it for your state with your accountant before you print prices that include or exclude it.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a vet visit costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: exams from $79, core vaccines $41, spay and neuter packages from $550, dental cleaning with X-rays $650” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Vet prices: common questions

How much do vets charge for an exam?

Two clinics' published lists: $59 at one Tampa clinic, $79–$89 at one Phoenix-area group (read November 2026). Banfield's office visit ran $45.95–$73.95 across 25 US cities (Ollie, March 2025). The calculator above uses these fees.

How much should I charge for an urgent-care or weekend visit?

The Phoenix-area group charges $99–$129 for an urgent-care or weekend exam and $119–$149 for a weekend urgent exam, against $79–$89 for a regular one. Pet insurer Pumpkin's claims put the average emergency bill at $653 for dogs and $919 for cats (August 2025).

What do clinics charge for vaccines?

Core dog vaccines run $41–$44 each at the Phoenix group; the Tampa clinic charges $36.95 for DA2PP and $39 for rabies; canine influenza $109–$115 and Lyme $115–$120 (Phoenix). Pumpkin's typical ranges are $15–$50 a vaccine for dogs and $10–$45 for cats.

How much should a spay or neuter cost?

$550–$650 as a package at the Phoenix group (dog spay under 50 lbs, dog neuter, cat spay or neuter), $750–$850 for a dog spay over 50 lbs, each including anesthesia, IV fluids, pain medication and an e-collar. Banfield's estimator averaged $460.30 for a spay and $403.55 for a neuter across 25 cities (Ollie, March 2025).

How much do vets charge for a dental cleaning?

$650 with anesthesia, scaling, polishing and dental X-rays at the Phoenix group, extractions from $160; the Tampa clinic starts a scale and polish at $222.30. Pumpkin's typical range for a dental check and cleaning is $113–$750.

How do practices set and raise their fees?

Cost first, then a margin — most small animal practices target 10%–15% net — checked against the AAHA Veterinary Fee Reference (950+ practices, 500+ services) and local competitors, reviewed semiannually and audited at least once a year (Weave).

Should I put my vet prices on my website?

Yes, for the services owners compare — the exam, core vaccines, spay and neuter packages and dental cleaning — with what each package includes. Several results on Google's first page for “vet prices” are clinics' own price lists. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your fees, and change them when you review them.

Where these numbers come from

Every range on this page is read off a published source, dated below. They're US figures from veterinary clinics' published price lists and pet insurers' data — prices, not veterinary advice — typical, not a rule; your costs and your market come first.

Put your fees on your clinic's website
