The short answer

Barbershops charge $30 to $65 for a men's haircut, classic or fade, $20 to $40 for a beard trim and shape, $50 to $90 for the haircut-and-beard combo, $35 to $65 for a traditional straight razor shave and $20 to $40 for a kids' haircut (Booksy's marketplace averages, read November 2026). BarbersTake puts the national average men's cut at about $41, inside a $19 to $110 range: $35 to $65 at an independent barbershop, $25 to $35 at a chain and $45 to $70 or more at a salon (February 2026).

The other reads land close. Goldie puts a standard haircut at $35 to $70, with men's cuts averaging $43 and women's about $69 (March 2026); its own transaction data has the haircut clustering at $20 to $35, averaging about $29 to $30, and the beard trim at $10 to $30, averaging about $15 to $20 with $10 and $15 the most common prices (February 2026). Boulevard's ranges are $25 to $60 for a haircut or fade, $10 to $30 for a beard trim and $30 to $75 for a straight razor shave (updated July 2026).

The combo is where the ticket grows: a standard haircut and beard trim is $35 to $55, a razor-finished version $45 to $65, a fade and beard $50 to $70 and the VIP with a hot towel $65 to $100 (Booksy). The small lines go on top — a shape-up or line-up from $10, an edge up from $15, a straight razor neck shave from $20, a mustache trim from $10 — and a grooming membership runs from about $40, $70 or $120 a month by tier, $30 for students (Mangomint's example menu, October 2026).

Price from the chair hour: the median barber earns $18.37 an hour (O*NET, 2025 wages), a cut takes 30 to 60 minutes (Booksy), and the shop's rent, product and software sit on top — so the price is the cut's share of the chair hour plus the margin, tiered by the barber's level (BarbersTake), with Goldie's advice to a newly licensed stylist — 10% to 20% below the established chairs around you — applying to the new barber too, and raises of about 10% a service (Goldie). Then put the list on your website: “barber prices” is Googled about 590 times a month and put to AI assistants about 5,100 times, and “how much to charge for a haircut” is asked of AI about 1,750 times (DataForSEO, October 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price a barbershop service

Six steps from the chair hour to the number on the price list — and the combo and membership that lift the ticket without adding minutes.

01

Cost the chair hour

The median barber earns $18.37 an hour (O*NET, 2025 wages) — more on commission in a busy shop. Add payroll taxes and the product the hour uses, then the shop's share: BarbersTake notes commercial rents can exceed $6,000 a month in urban centers (February 2026).

02

Count the cuts an hour

A men's haircut takes 30–60 minutes and a beard trim 20–40 (Booksy's marketplace durations), so a chair does one to two cuts an hour — the price has to carry the hour, not the minute.

03

Place the cut by the kind of shop

Independent barbershops charge $35–$65, chains $25–$35 and salons $45–$70 or more for a men's cut (BarbersTake); Booksy's classic-or-fade average is $30–$65. Goldie's advice to a newly licensed stylist — price 10%–20% below the established chairs around you — applies to the new barber too (March 2026).

04

Tier by barber and by service

BarbersTake's model is tiered pricing by barber level — junior, senior, specialty — with a premium cut at $60–$100 and loyal clients grandfathered through a price change (February 2026). The fade, the razor finish and the hot towel each carry their own line.

05

Sell the combo

A haircut and beard trim is $35–$55 standard, $45–$65 razor-finished, $50–$70 as a fade and beard and $65–$100 as a VIP with hot towel (Booksy) — the same chair, a bigger ticket. Put the eyebrows ($5–$15), the line-up and the neck shave on the menu as add-ons.

06

Offer a membership and raise prices on a schedule

Mangomint's example menu runs grooming memberships from $40, $70 and $120 a month by tier and $30 for students (October 2026) — a set number of cuts a month, paid in advance. Goldie's price increases run about 10% a service (March 2026); BarbersTake's own history has the standard cut going from $12–$18 in the early 2000s to about $41 today.

The formula, worked through

Say it's a 40-minute fade at $45 in an independent shop — inside Booksy's $30–$65 classic-or-fade range and BarbersTake's $35–$65 for an independent barbershop (its US average is $41, Virginia's $44).

At 40 minutes the chair does 1.5 cuts an hour, so it takes $67.50 an hour. The barber's wage at the O*NET median is $18.37; load it 25% for payroll taxes and product and it's about $23 an hour. That leaves about $44.50 of the chair hour for rent, software, card fees and profit; if the chair's share of the overhead is $25 an hour, the shop keeps about $19.50 — roughly 29% of the takings. The same chair at a chain's $35 takes $52.50 an hour and keeps about $4.50 at the same costs, about 9%.

So “fade from $45” is a fair line for the price list, and the combo — $50–$70 for a fade and beard (Booksy) — lifts the ticket for 20–40 more minutes of beard work. The wage, the durations and the ranges are the publishers'; the 25% load, the $25 overhead share and the margin arithmetic are ours, and your rent and your barbers' commission are what make the price yours.

What to charge in your part of the country

The cut is priced by the town. BarbersTake's state averages for a standard men's cut at an independent barbershop run from $27 in Mississippi, $28 in Arkansas and $29 in Alabama and West Virginia to $55 in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington, $60 in New York and $68 in Hawaii (February 2026). Goldie sees the same spread — a basic men's cut at $20–$45 in rural Mississippi against $60–$80 in Manhattan, $20–$30 for a Midwest trim and $45–$70 in the Western metros (March 2026). The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so a $45 cut in an average market is about $50 in California and about $39 in Arkansas.

In the US, barbers hold a state license and the shop its own permit, renewed on a schedule with fees and, in many states, continuing-education hours — price the renewals into the overhead, and our guide to becoming a barber covers the license by state. Whether a haircut carries sales tax depends on the state, and tips (Booksy's guide suggests 15%–20%) are the client's, never part of your price. Check your state board's rules and confirm the tax line with your accountant.

Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — the cut by the kind of shop, the beard on its own line, the combo priced above the two, the small lines as add-ons and a membership for the regulars hold everywhere — and check what the shops on your street list on their own booking pages.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a haircut costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: men's haircut from $35, beard trim from $20, haircut and beard from $50” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Barber pricing: common questions

How much should I charge for a men's haircut?

$30–$65 for a classic cut or a fade (Booksy's marketplace averages, read November 2026). BarbersTake's national average is about $41 — $35–$65 at an independent barbershop, $25–$35 at a chain, $45–$70 or more at a salon (February 2026) — and Goldie puts men's cuts at an average of $43 (March 2026). The calculator above works out the cut by the kind of shop, with the extras.

How much should I charge for a beard trim?

$20–$40 for a beard trim and shape (Booksy, read November 2026); Boulevard's range is $10–$30 (updated July 2026), and Goldie's transaction data puts most trims at $10–$20 with a $25–$30 cluster above and $35–$50 or more for premium work (February 2026). Sold with the cut, the combo is $50–$90 (Booksy).

How much should I charge for a fade?

The same band as a classic cut — $30–$65 (Booksy) or $25–$60 (Boulevard) — with the detail priced in the combo: a fade and beard is $50–$70 and a razor-finished haircut and beard $45–$65 (Booksy's combo guide, read November 2026). A premium cut runs $60–$100 (BarbersTake, February 2026).

How much should I charge for a haircut and beard combo?

$50–$90 (Booksy's marketplace average). By finish: $35–$55 for a standard haircut and beard trim, $45–$65 razor-finished, $50–$70 as a fade and beard, $55–$75 with eyebrows, $55–$80 for precision beard sculpture and $65–$100 for the VIP with hot towel (Booksy's combo guide, read November 2026).

How much should I charge for a straight razor shave?

$35–$65 for a traditional straight razor shave (Booksy, read November 2026); Boulevard's range is $30–$75 (updated July 2026). Mangomint's example menu starts the straight razor shave at $30, the neck shave at $20 and a shave with a face mask at $50 (October 2026).

How much should I charge for a kids' haircut?

$20–$40 (Booksy, read November 2026). Mangomint's example menu starts a boy's haircut at $20 and a father-and-son package at $50 (October 2026).

Should I offer a membership?

BarbersTake lists membership and subscription models — a set number of haircuts a month — among the pricing models barbershops use (February 2026), and Mangomint's example menu prices them from $40, $70 and $120 a month by tier, $30 for students (October 2026). A membership is paid in advance and fills the chair on the quiet days; set it so the cuts in it price at or just under your list.

Should I put my barber prices on my website?

Yes — a “from” price for the cut, the beard trim and the combo answers the first question before the booking, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your menu, and change it when your prices do.
