The short answer
A women's haircut runs $10 to $90 in the US, a men's $15 to $40, a kids' $15 to $40 and a blowout $20 to $100 (StyleSeat). By state, a women's cut averages $93 in California and $87 in New York, a men's $42 in Delaware and $15 in West Virginia (StyleSeat's haircut guide).
Color: single-process $70 to $100 or more, a root touch-up $50 to $75, double-process $100 to $175 or more for a natural tone and $125 to $200 or more for a fashion shade, toner $50 to $70, color correction about $100 an hour (StyleSeat). Highlights $20 to $100 partial and $75 to $150 full, babylights $55 to $350; balayage $101 to $222 partial and $76 to $452 full, $154 and $193 on average (StyleSeat).
The stylist's level is the multiplier: Vagaro's menu example puts a master stylist's cut and style at $85–$110 against a junior's $55–$75, balayage and highlights at $175–$225 and express color at $95–$120 (February 2025). Mangomint's rule is price per minute — a $120 color over 90 minutes is $1.33 a minute, a $175 blonding over 180 minutes $0.97 — with a 20% net profit target for commission salons (April 2026).
Price by the minute in the chair, tier the stylists, publish the add-ons (toner, lowlights, treatments), and put the list on your website: salon price lists are searched a thousand times a month, and “hair salon pricing” is put to AI assistants about three thousand times a month (DataForSEO, October 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price hair salon services
Six steps from the minutes in the chair to the number on your menu.
Time every service
Mangomint's unit is price per minute: a $120 color over 90 minutes is $1.33 a minute, a $175 blonding over 180 minutes $0.97 (April 2026). Time your menu for a month before you set it.
Start from the market range
Women's cut $10–$90, men's $15–$40, single-process $70–$100+, full highlights $75–$150, full balayage $76–$452 (StyleSeat). Your town's end of each range is in the three nearest salons' printed lists.
Tier the stylists
Vagaro's menu example: junior cut and style $55–$75, master $85–$110 — about 50% more for the same minutes (February 2025). Three levels is plenty; the level is the raise.
Price color by the step
Root touch-up $50–$75, single-process $70–$100+, double-process $100–$175+, toner $50–$70, color correction $100 an hour (StyleSeat). Charge the toner as its own line — it's product and time every lightening service uses.
Check the margin
Mangomint's targets: 20% net profit for a commission salon, 10%–15% for a payroll salon (April 2026). Vagaro's cost-plus example doubles a $100 balayage cost to a $200 price. Price per minute first, then check each service clears the target.
Publish the add-ons
Lowlights $20–$40 a shade, deep conditioning $15–$300, keratin $80–$400 (StyleSeat). A printed add-on sells itself at the shampoo bowl; an unprinted one gets given away.
The formula, worked through
Say a full balayage with a toner, by a senior colorist, three hours in the chair.
A full balayage is $76–$452 nationally, $193 on average (StyleSeat); the toner adds $50–$70. Mangomint's per-minute check: at $250 all-in over 180 minutes, the chair earns $1.39 a minute — above its $1.33-a-minute color example.
Vagaro's menu puts balayage and highlights at $175–$225 for a mixed suburban clientele (February 2025). So “women's cuts from $45, balayage from $175, toner $50” is a fair line for your menu — your end of each range comes from your minutes and your rent. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.
What to charge in your part of the country
StyleSeat's haircut guide's state averages: a women's cut $93 in California, $87 in New York, $85 in Connecticut, $75 in Washington and DC, $36 in Montana and $17 in Wyoming; highlights from $65 in Montana to $270 in North Dakota, $200 in California; full balayage from $76 in New York to $452 in New Hampshire.
Across all prices, the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so a $60 cut in an average market is about $66 in California and about $52 in Arkansas.
Inside one city the spread is the salon's positioning as much as the zip code: Vagaro's demographic example prices the same mixed neighbourhood from a $55 junior cut to a $225 balayage. Pick your tier, then print it.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a salon visit costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: women's cuts from $45, men's from $25, single-process color from $70, balayage from $175” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Hair salon pricing: common questions
$10–$90 for a women's cut, $15–$40 for a men's or a kids' cut, $20–$100 for a blowout (StyleSeat). State averages for a women's cut run from $17 in Wyoming to $93 in California. The calculator above uses the national ranges, with a senior-stylist multiplier from Vagaro's menu example.
Single-process $70–$100 or more, root touch-up $50–$75, double-process $100–$175+ for a natural tone and $125–$200+ for a fashion shade, toner $50–$70, color correction about $100 an hour (StyleSeat). Charge the toner as its own line.
Partial highlights $20–$100, full $75–$150, babylights $55–$350; partial balayage $101–$222 ($154 on average) and full balayage $76–$452 ($193 on average) (StyleSeat). Vagaro's suburban menu example prices balayage and highlights at $175–$225 (February 2025).
Vagaro's example menu puts a master stylist's cut and style at $85–$110 against a junior's $55–$75 — roughly 50% more for the same minutes (February 2025). Three levels on the menu is plenty; the level is how a stylist gets a raise without the whole salon's prices moving.
Divide each price by the minutes in the chair (Mangomint, April 2026): a $120 color over 90 minutes earns $1.33 a minute; if your cuts earn half that, they're underpriced or overlong. Then check the margin — 20% net for a commission salon, 10%–15% for payroll (Mangomint).
StyleSeat's range is free to $50. Most salons fold a short consultation into the service and charge for a stand-alone color consultation, crediting it against the booking.
Cuts by client, color by step (touch-up, single, double, toner), highlights and balayage partial and full, treatments, occasion styling, and the stylist levels — with 'from' prices where the hair decides. Say that long or thick hair is priced at the consultation.
Yes — the full list with stylist levels and 'from' prices. 'Salon price list' is searched a thousand times a month in the US, and 'hair salon pricing' is put to AI assistants about three thousand times a month (DataForSEO, October 2026). On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your menu, and change it any time.
