The short answer

A basic automatic car wash in the US costs $10 to $25, and a full-service wash $30 to $70 or more (AutoManiacs' price guide, November 2025). Its tiers: a basic automatic wash $10–$15, an automatic wash with wax $15–$25, a full-service wash with the interior $30–$70+, and a self-service bay $5–$15. Add-ons such as tire shine, wax, ceramic or an undercarriage wash add $5–$20 to a ticket.

Unlimited plans are where express washes make their money. Across Michigan, unlimited memberships run from roughly $10 a month to $95, with a median near $21.99, and most Detroit and Ann Arbor drivers settle into the $25–$40 band where paint protection is included; adding interior cleaning puts a plan $19–$23 a month above its exterior-only version (Jax Kar Wash, October 2026). Jax's own menu makes the maths plain: single washes at $11, $15, $20 and $24, plans at $25.99, $34.99 and $40.99 — at two washes a month the plan is already $4–$7 ahead of paying per wash.

Industry benchmarks put the average car wash profit margin between 10% and 20%, with well-run express washes with strong membership sign-ups above it, and full-service and self-service formats lower (Vanta Insights, October 2026). Labor is the pressure: average weekly wages for car wash workers reached $626 in 2024 (BLS figures, as Vanta reports them).

Price the menu in three steps — good, better, best — set the unlimited plan at about two single washes, and put the menu on your website: the driver choosing between two washes on the same road picks the one whose prices they can see before they pull in.

Car wash prices and membership rates (2026)

Typical US figures. For context: AutoManiacs puts a weekly washer's spend at $40–$100 a month across wash types (November 2025); Jax Kar Wash's break-even is two washes a month, after which a weekly washer's effective price drops to about $6 a wash on its entry plan and under $10 on its top plan (October 2026).

ADD-ONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

What to add for the extras and the interior

Tire shine, wax, ceramic and the undercarriage are the upsell on a single wash; the interior is the upsell on a plan.

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price a car wash menu

Six steps from the cost per car to the menu board and the monthly plan.

01

Know your cost per car

Chemicals and water per wash, the labor on the line, utilities and the equipment loan, spread over the cars you actually wash a month. Vanta Insights names labor, chemicals and real estate or debt service as the three costs that decide where a wash lands in the 10%–20% margin range (October 2026).

02

Build three tiers

A basic wash at $10–$12, a deluxe wash with wax or a tire treatment at $15–$18 and a premium wash with the protectants or undercarriage at $20–$25 (AutoManiacs' typical express menu, November 2025). Three tiers give the customer a middle to choose.

03

Price the unlimited plan at two washes

Jax Kar Wash prices its plans so that the second wash of the month pays for the membership — $25.99 against a $15 single wash, $40.99 against $24 (October 2026). Every wash after the second is where the member feels the value and the wash keeps the revenue.

04

Put the interior on its own line

Interior cleaning is labor, not machinery — Jax's full-service plans run $19–$23 a month above the exterior-only versions, and AutoManiacs puts a full-service single wash at $30–$70+ against $10–$25 for an automatic one.

05

Sell the add-ons at the pay station

Tire shine, wax, ceramic and an undercarriage wash add $5–$20 to a ticket (AutoManiacs). On a menu they read as the difference between the tiers; at the kiosk they read as a one-tap upgrade.

06

Check the margin

Industry benchmarks put car wash margins at 10%–20%, with express washes with strong membership penetration at the top of the range and full-service formats lower (Vanta Insights). If your menu prices out below that on your own cost per car, the menu is wrong, not the market.

The formula, worked through

Say you run an express tunnel and want a three-tier menu and an unlimited plan.

Single washes: a basic wash at $11, a mid wash at $15 and a top wash at $24 — the single-wash prices on Jax Kar Wash's October 2026 menu, inside AutoManiacs' $10–$25 automatic-wash range. The plans sit at $25.99, $34.99 and $40.99: at two washes a month a member is $4–$7 ahead of paying per wash, and a weekly washer pays about $6 a wash on the entry plan. Interior cleaning on a plan adds $19–$23 a month, because it needs a person.

A prepaid year sweetens the plan without cutting the monthly price: Jax gives the 13th and 14th months free plus a gift card, so $491.88 buys 14 months of its top plan — $35.13 a month against $40.99. The figures are the publisher's; your tunnel, your labor and the wash down the road make them yours.

What to charge in your area

The single-wash tiers on this page are national figures and the membership band is one state's. AutoManiacs notes that prices run higher in major cities and lower in rural and suburban areas (November 2025); within Michigan alone, unlimited plans run from about $10 to $95 a month with a median near $21.99 (Jax Kar Wash, October 2026).

The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100, and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026). So a $15 wash in an average market is about $17 in California and about $13 in Arkansas — but the wash across the road sets the ceiling more than the state does.

Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — three single-wash tiers, an unlimited plan at about two washes, the interior on its own line — and check what the washes near you print on their own menu boards and websites.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a car wash costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: basic washes from $10, premium washes from $15, unlimited plans from $25 a month” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Car wash pricing: common questions

How much should I charge for a basic car wash?

$10–$15 for a basic automatic wash and $15–$25 for a premium wash with wax (AutoManiacs, November 2025); a self-service bay runs $5–$15. The calculator above prices each tier and the add-ons.

How much should I charge for a full-service car wash?

$30–$70 or more when the interior is included (AutoManiacs, November 2025). The interior is labor — vacuuming, mats, glass — so price it as its own tier rather than folding it into the automatic wash.

How much should an unlimited car wash membership cost per month?

About two single washes. Across Michigan, unlimited plans run from roughly $10 to $95 a month with a median near $21.99, and most drivers settle into the $25–$40 band that includes paint protection (Jax Kar Wash, October 2026). Jax's own plans — $25.99, $34.99 and $40.99 against single washes of $15, $20 and $24 — break even at the second wash of the month.

What should I charge for add-ons like tire shine or wax?

$5–$20 on top of the wash for tire shine, wax, a ceramic application or an undercarriage wash (AutoManiacs, November 2025). On a menu they are the difference between the tiers; at the pay station they are a one-tap upgrade.

What profit margin does a car wash make?

Industry benchmarks put the average car wash profit margin between 10% and 20% (Vanta Insights, October 2026). Express washes with strong membership sign-ups land at the top of the range or above it; full-service and self-service formats land lower because of labor and lower throughput.

Should I charge more for the interior on a membership?

Yes — a plan with interior cleaning runs $19–$23 a month above the exterior-only version at Jax Kar Wash (October 2026), because the interior needs a person while the exterior is automated. Keep the exterior plan as the entry price and the interior as the upgrade.

Should I put my car wash prices on my website?

Yes — the three tiers and the monthly plan, as “from” prices. Drivers compare washes on their phones before they pull in, and an AI assistant can only quote a price that is published. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your menu, and change it any time.
