The short answer
A handyman invoice lists each task on its own line — “mount 65-inch TV”, “replace three door handles”, “patch and paint drywall” — with a flat price or hours × your rate, then materials, any trip charge, tax and the balance due.
One line per task matters more for handymen than for any other trade: a visit is usually five small jobs, and a single “handyman services, 4 hours” line is the one customers question.
Add your business details, the customer and job address, an invoice number and due date, and your payment terms. If you work under a state license, put the number on it.

Every line on the template, in order, and what to write on it.

How to fill out a handyman invoice
Write it up before you pack the van — the tasks are fresh in your head.
Save your details once
Business name, phone, email, address and any license number at the top, saved in the file so every invoice starts filled in.
Number and date it
The next number in your series, today's date, and a due date the customer can see.
Name every task
One line per task, in the customer's words. Flat price where you quoted one; hours × rate where you didn't.
Add materials and the trip charge
Materials you bought, and your trip charge — or lift a small visit to your job minimum.
Total it up
Tax where your state charges it, minus any deposit, with the balance due in bold.
Send it the same day
Email it or hand it over before you leave. Add your guarantee — it's why people call you back.
How handymen get paid faster
Quote flat, bill flat. Customers pay flat prices faster than hours: “TV mount, $149” is settled, “2.2 hours” invites a conversation. Keep hourly for work you can't size up front, and say so on the line.
Set a minimum. A trip charge or a first-hour minimum keeps one-task visits worth the drive. Put it on your website and your estimate so it's not a surprise on the invoice.
Know where your license limits are. Many states cap the jobs you can take without a contractor's license. In California, for example, since January 2025 an unlicensed handyperson can take a job only under $1,000 — and only if it needs no permit and they hire no one to help (California Contractors State License Board). Check your state's rule before you invoice a bigger job.
Tax depends on the state. In the US, whether handyman labor, materials or both are taxable varies by state; separate lines keep either answer easy to apply. Check your state's revenue department.
Late fees go in writing first. In the US, a late fee has to be agreed before the job — on your estimate or terms — and your state sets the limits.
Outside the US. The invoice itself has rules: in Australia a GST-registered business issues a tax invoice showing its ABN, in New Zealand a GST-registered business shows its GST number, and in the UK and EU a VAT-registered business shows its VAT number and the VAT charged. Confirm the details with your accountant.

Handyman invoices: common questions

By the job wherever you can quote it — customers pay flat prices faster, and you keep the gain when you're quick. Charge hourly for work you can't size in advance, like tracing a problem, and say “hourly” on that line so the invoice explains itself.
Add materials as their own line, or itemize them when they add up to more than a few dollars. Keep the receipts: customers sometimes ask, and a clear materials line is what separates a professional invoice from a guess.
