The short answer
Interior designers charge $50 to $200 an hour for design time in the US (HomeAdvisor, June 2026) — $100 to $200 on average, from $50 for a junior designer to $450 for the principal of a firm (HomeGuide, April 2023); Fiverr's 2026 average is $150 an hour. A design consultation is $150 to $500 for two to four hours (HomeAdvisor) and a day rate $600 to $2,200 (HomeGuide).
By the space: $5 to $17 per square foot for a whole home, most between $7 and $12 (HomeGuide; HomeAdvisor's band is $5 to $15); $450 to $1,500 a room for design only; and $1,000 to $7,800 a room with the furnishings — a living room $2,500 to $5,000, a bedroom $1,000 to $2,000 (HomeGuide). Fixr's full-service rooms run from $500 to $2,000 for a hallway to $5,000 to $10,000 for a kitchen (January 2025).
The other models are a share of the project: a percentage fee of 10% to 30% of the budget (Fixr) and a commission or cost-plus markup on furnishings of 10% to 40% (HomeAdvisor; HomeGuide's typical markup is 15% to 30%). Most homeowners spend $2,055 to $15,256 on a designer, around $8,550 (HomeAdvisor), before furnishings that add $2,000 to $5,000.
Pick one model per job, name what it excludes, and put “from” prices on your website: “how much do interior designers charge” is Googled about 2,900 times a month, and “interior design fees” is put to AI assistants about 1,100 times (DataForSEO, October 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price an interior design project
Six steps from the first call to the fee on the proposal.
Charge for the consultation
$150–$500 for two to four hours (HomeAdvisor), $50–$250 for an hour (HomeGuide). It's where you scope the job; a free one scopes it for nothing.
Pick one fee model per project
Hourly ($50–$200) for small or open-ended work; per square foot ($5–$17) for a whole home; per room ($450–$1,500 design only, more with furnishings) for a defined scope; a day rate ($600–$2,200) when the client does the project management.
Price the hours underneath
Whatever the model, count the hours: a 2,000-square-foot home at $7–$12 per square foot is $14,000–$24,000 — divide by the hours and it has to come out above your hourly rate, not below it.
Add the percentage on big projects
A fee of 10%–30% of the project budget (Fixr) or a commission of 10%–40% on furnishings (HomeAdvisor) pays for procurement and site management. Say which it is, and what it's a percentage of.
Keep furnishings as their own line
They add $2,000–$5,000 to a typical project (HomeAdvisor). Bill them at cost plus your markup — HomeGuide's typical cost-plus is 15%–30% — never buried in the design fee.
Name the extras
Renderings add 5%–10% to the fee (HomeAdvisor), shopping trips and site visits are often $75 an hour, and calls and emails are billed in 15-minute increments at the hourly rate (Fixr). A fee schedule that lists them is paid in full.
The formula, worked through
Say a living room and a bedroom, full-service, with one all-day site and shopping visit.
Fixr's full-service rooms are $4,000–$6,000 for a living room and $1,000–$3,000 for a bedroom, so the design fee runs $5,000–$9,000; the day on site at Fixr's $75 an hour adds about $600. So about $5,600–$9,600 before the furnishings, which go on their own line at cost plus your markup — at HomeGuide's typical 15%–30% on a $10,000 order, that's another $1,500–$3,000 of fee.
Against the hours: at 60 hours of design, sourcing and site time, the middle of that range is about $125 an hour — inside HomeGuide's $100–$200 average. So “room design from $450, full-service rooms from $1,000” is a fair line for your website. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.
What to charge in your part of the country
Rates follow the cost of living and the firm: HomeGuide's hourly band runs from $50 for a junior designer to $450 for the principal of a firm, and commercial work is about $50 per square foot against $5–$17 for homes (April 2023); Fiverr's commercial band is $30 to more than $300 per square foot (August 2026).
The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so a $150-an-hour rate in an average market is about $165 in California and about $130 in Arkansas.
In the US, what you may call yourself and sign off is set by state: some states register or license the title “interior designer” and reserve stamped drawings for licensed designers, and if you resell furnishings to clients you collect sales tax on them under your state's rules. Check your state's rules before you print the title or the fee schedule.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what an interior designer costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: design consultation from $150, room design from $450, full-service rooms from $1,000, whole-home design from $5 per square foot” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Interior design fees: common questions
$50–$200 an hour for design time (HomeAdvisor, June 2026); $100–$200 on average, from $50 for a junior designer to $450 for a principal (HomeGuide, April 2023); Fiverr's 2026 average is $150. Shopping trips and site visits are often $75 an hour (Fixr). The calculator above uses the HomeAdvisor band.
$5–$17 per square foot for a whole home, most homeowners paying $7–$12 (HomeGuide, April 2023); HomeAdvisor's band is $5–$15 and Fiverr's average $9 (2026). The rate usually excludes furnishings and installation, and designers set a minimum fee for small rooms.
$450–$1,500 for design only, about $975 on average; $1,000–$7,800 with the furnishings, a $3,200 median — a living room $2,500–$5,000, a bedroom $1,000–$2,000 (HomeGuide; Fiverr, August 2026). Fixr's full-service rooms: hallway $500–$2,000, bedroom $1,000–$3,000, home office $3,000–$5,000, living room $4,000–$6,000, bathroom $4,000–$10,000, kitchen $5,000–$10,000 (January 2025).
$150–$500 for two to four hours (HomeAdvisor, June 2026); $50–$250 for about an hour (HomeGuide); Fixr puts a flat consultation at $50–$500 and an all-day one at $600–$900 (January 2025). Credit it against the fee if the client books the project.
You charge a share of the project budget — 10%–30% (Fixr) — or a commission on furnishings of 10%–40% (HomeAdvisor). HomeGuide's cost-plus markup runs 10%–45% with 15%–30% typical: a $15,000 scope at 30% is a $4,500 fee. Say what the percentage applies to; it changes as the scope does.
$600–$2,200 for an eight-hour day of design only (HomeGuide); Fixr's is $600–$1,200, up to $2,000 for an involved day. The client does the ordering, driving and placement, which is why it's the cheaper way to buy a designer's time.
$300–$600 for the first consultation, then about $500 per room per month of staged furniture (Fiverr, August 2026, citing Realtor.com). Price the consultation and the monthly rental as two lines, with a minimum term.
Yes — a “from” price per model (consultation, room, whole home) answers the first question before the call and screens out the wrong budget. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your fee schedule, and change it when your costs do.
