The short answer

US mobile mechanics charge $50 to $150 an hour, with most billing $75 to $100 and a national average of $85 (Trackara, a software vendor, October 2026). The visit is its own line: a full diagnostic visit is usually $75 to $150 (Trackara), and one Washington mechanic charges a $75 service call inside city limits plus 70 cents a mile there and back (Statesman Examiner, March 2026).

By the job, Airtasker's US guide puts a typical mobile mechanic task at $150 to $200 and a median of $200 (May 2026): a diagnostic or inspection $80 to $150, an oil change $90 to $160, a battery $120 to $220, brake pads $150 to $300, a starter $250 to $500 and an alternator $300 to $650.

Real owners post it plainly: $50 an hour in New Hampshire (Valley News, October 2025); $65 an hour plus 95 cents a mile, rising to $85 from July, in Maine (Bangor Daily News, May 2026); a $125 service call and $150 an hour in Myrtle Beach, $175 after 6 PM (Housecall Auto Mechanics). Mechanics bidding on a Chicago platform ask $80 to $120 an hour with a typical $21 travel fee (TravelMechanic, October 2026).

What moves the price is the drive, the hour of the day and the car: the call-out and the radius matter as much as the rate. Work yours out from your own costs with the calculator and the formula below.

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price mobile mechanic work

Six steps from your costs and your radius to the number on your price list.

01

Start from your cost per billable hour

Trackara's example: $24,800 of yearly business costs plus a $60,000 salary is $84,800; ÷ 1,200 billable hours = $70.67 an hour; with a 25% margin $88.34, rounded to $90.

02

Charge for the visit

A call-out or diagnostic visit of $75–$150 (Trackara). Real owners: $75 inside city limits (Ranger Mobile Garage, Colville); $125 for a service call and estimate, $150 on a Sunday (Housecall Auto Mechanics, Myrtle Beach).

03

Charge for the miles

95 cents a mile in Maine (Bangor Daily News); 70 cents a mile there and back in Colville (Statesman Examiner); a typical $21 travel fee on the Chicago platform (TravelMechanic). Set a radius the fee covers and a per-mile rate beyond it.

04

Quote the weekly jobs flat

Airtasker's bands are the market check — brake pads $150–$300, a battery $120–$220. Ranger Mobile Garage quotes every job at a flat rate instead of hourly; Housecall Auto posts $250 for a one-axle brake job with the customer's parts, service call included, and a $600 day rate.

05

Decide on parts

Trackara puts the usual markup at 20–40% over wholesale; Ranger Mobile Garage adds no markup; Housecall Auto supplies the parts except on brake jobs, which it prices at $250 for one axle with the customer's parts. Whichever you choose, show parts and labor as separate lines.

06

Price the hour of the day

Trackara's example structure: +30% for same-day, 1.5× for evenings and weekends, 2× on holidays. Housecall Auto charges $175 an hour after 6 PM and $150 for a Sunday service call.

The formula, worked through

Say it's a battery in a customer's driveway, 10 miles out, on a weekday afternoon. At Trackara's worked rate of $90 an hour, an hour at the car is $90. A $75 call-out — the low end of Trackara's $75–$150, and Ranger Mobile Garage's exact fee — takes it to $165. Twenty miles there and back at Maxfield's 95 cents is $19 more: $184 before the battery.

That sits inside Airtasker's $120–$220 band for a battery replacement, and under the $215–$235 the Chicago platform estimated for a 2016 Corolla (TravelMechanic, October 2026); in Myrtle Beach the same job is about $400 installed with a DieHard battery (Housecall Auto Mechanics).

So “battery replacement from $165 plus the part” is a fair line for your price list, with the miles as their own line beyond your radius. The rates are the publishers' and the owners'; the arithmetic is ours.

What to charge where you drive

The ranges on this page are US figures. Trackara puts rural mobile mechanics at $55–$75 an hour and major metros at $100–$150, with averages of $125 in the San Francisco Bay Area, $115 in the New York metro and $105 in Los Angeles (October 2026). Airtasker's per-job figures run from $140–$190 in Houston and Phoenix to $190–$240 in New York City (May 2026). In Southern California's Inland Empire, Supercanic puts a mobile diagnosis at $90–$150 and labor at $100–$150 an hour, against $180–$220 at a dealership (August 2026).

Across all prices, the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so an $85 hour in an average market is about $94 in California and about $74 in Arkansas. The owners quoted here show the same spread: $50 an hour in New Hampshire, $65 rising to $85 in rural Maine, $150 in Myrtle Beach.

Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — a call-out for the visit, a rate for the hour at the car, the miles beyond your radius and flat prices for routine jobs hold everywhere — and check what the mobile mechanics around you post on their own websites.

Mobile mechanic prices: common questions

How much do mobile mechanics charge?

$50–$150 an hour, most $75–$100, average $85 (Trackara, a software vendor, October 2026), plus a visit fee; by the job, Airtasker's US guide puts a typical task at $150–$200 with a median of $200 (May 2026). The calculator above works out the hours, the call-out and the timing.

How much is a mobile mechanic call-out fee?

A full diagnostic visit is usually $75–$150 (Trackara). Real examples: $75 inside Colville city limits plus 70 cents a mile (Statesman Examiner, March 2026); a $125 service call and estimate in Myrtle Beach, $150 on Sundays (Housecall Auto Mechanics); $90–$150 for a diagnosis visit in Southern California's Inland Empire, which many companies apply to the repair (Supercanic, August 2026).

Do mobile mechanics charge for travel?

Most do, past a radius: 95 cents a mile in Maine (Bangor Daily News, May 2026), 70 cents a mile there and back in Colville, Washington (Statesman Examiner), and a typical $21 travel fee on the Chicago platform (TravelMechanic, October 2026). Myrtle Beach's Housecall Auto adds a travel charge for the long drives without printing the amount.

Are mobile mechanics cheaper than a shop?

On labor, about the same or a little more: Trackara puts mobile rates at $90–$120 against $80–$110 at independent shops, a 10–15% premium, and 10–25% below dealerships (October 2026). On the whole bill, often less: eight of the nine jobs the Chicago platform priced came in under the midpoint of the published shop range (TravelMechanic, October 2026), and the driver saves the tow and the day. Shops most commonly post $100–$119 an hour (PartsTech's September 2025 survey, via Ratchet+Wrench).

How much should a mobile mechanic charge per hour?

Build it from your costs — Trackara's worked example lands at $90 — then check it against its experience bands: $50–$75 with up to two years, $75–$100 with three to seven, $100–$130 with eight or more (October 2026). Real owners: $50 an hour in New Hampshire, $65 rising to $85 in Maine, $150 in Myrtle Beach. Raise it 10–15% once you're consistently booked (Trackara).

Should a mobile mechanic charge flat rate or hourly?

Flat for the jobs you do every week — Ranger Mobile Garage quotes every job flat, Housecall Auto posts $250 for a one-axle brake job — so the driver has a number before you leave. Hourly plus the call-out for diagnosis and for anything you can't size until you're under the hood. Airtasker's bands are the market check for the flat prices.

How much should I charge for brake pads or an oil change at the customer's home?

Airtasker's US bands: brake pads $150–$300, an oil change $90–$160 (May 2026). Supercanic posts front pads at $180–$320 with parts and a mobile oil change from $150 in Southern California (August 2026); Housecall Auto charges $250 for one axle with the customer's parts, service call included. Price the part on its own line.

How much extra for same-day, evening or weekend work?

Trackara's example structure: +30% for same-day or emergency calls, 1.5× for evenings and weekends, 2× on holidays (October 2026). Housecall Auto charges $175 an hour after 6 PM any day, against $150 in the day, and $150 for a Sunday service call against $125.

Should I put my prices on my website?

Yes — your call-out fee, your hourly rate and “from” prices for the jobs you do every week, with your radius. It answers the first question before the call and gives an AI assistant a real number to quote. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your prices, and change them any time.

Where these numbers come from

Every range on this page is read off a published source, dated below. They're US figures for come-to-you car repair, with shop and dealership rates where a source prints them — typical, not a rule; your costs and your market come first.
