The short answer
Photographers charge $25 to $500 an hour in the US, and most charge $94 to $262 (Fash, September 2025). By level: semi-pro $75 to $150 an hour or $50 to $150 per image, professional $100 to $300 an hour or $75 to $350 per image, top professionals $200 to $500 and up an hour (Fash). Pixpa's bands are close: entry-level $50 to $150 an hour, experienced professionals $75 to $250.
By job: a portrait session is $150 to $370 and up, family sessions from $145, senior pictures $125 to $350, headshots $75 to $325, newborn $320 to $650, and event coverage $150 to $250 an hour with a two-hour minimum (Fash). A full wedding day runs $2,500 to $4,500 for most US couples, with a $3,000 national average from The Knot's 2025 Real Weddings Study and $4,400 on Zola's marketplace (Paperlust, July 2026); Fash puts packages at $1,600 to $3,600.
The extras are their own lines: a second shooter $300 to $700, an engagement session $400 to $800, an album $500 to $2,000, extra coverage hours $150 to $300 each, and travel at $0.50 to $1.00 a mile (Paperlust, July 2026). Commercial work is priced per image — product shots $35 to $170 each, website images $35 to $150 — or per shoot: real estate $150 to $350, a business shoot $400 to $600 (Fash).
Price from your hours, not the market's: ExpertPhotography's 2026 guide works a $90,000-a-year plan back to $150 per hour of job work. Then put “from” prices on your website — “how much do photographers charge” is put to AI assistants about 3,000 times a month, more than three times as often as it is Googled (DataForSEO, October 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price a photography job
Six steps from your annual plan to the number on the price list.
Start from the hours you can sell
ExpertPhotography's 2026 method: a $90,000 plan over 600 billable job hours is $150 an hour of job work — a six-hour job needs $900 before expenses. Count the editing: a one-hour shoot is several hours of preparation, travel and retouching.
Check it against the market
Most photographers charge $94–$262 an hour; professionals $100–$300 or $75–$350 per edited image (Fash). If your number sits under the band, your plan is too cheap or your hours too many.
Package sessions, don't meter them
A portrait session is $150–$370+, family from $145, headshots $75–$325, newborn $320–$650 (Fash). Sell a session with a set number of edited images; sell more images on top.
Price weddings as a day, then add
A full day is $2,500–$4,500 for most US couples, $3,000 on average (The Knot via Paperlust). Add the second shooter ($300–$700), extra hours ($150–$300 each), the engagement session ($400–$800) and the album ($500–$2,000) as their own lines.
Charge commercial work by the image or the shoot
Product shots $35–$170 per image, website images $35–$150, a real estate listing $150–$350, a business shoot $400–$600 (Fash). Usage is a separate line: a web licence is $200–$1,500 per image.
Put the extras in writing
Travel at $0.50–$1.00 a mile (Paperlust), prints at $24–$76+ for an 8×10 (Fash), rush edits and overtime. A price list that names them is quoted as the full price, not haggled down from the session fee.
The formula, worked through
Say an eight-hour wedding with a second shooter, an engagement session and a printed album, 100 miles of travel.
The day at $2,500–$4,500 (Paperlust, reporting The Knot) is the base; the second shooter adds $300–$700, the engagement session $400–$800, the album $500–$2,000, and travel at $0.50–$1.00 a mile adds $50–$100. So the package runs about $3,750–$8,100.
Against the hours: eight hours shooting plus about 30 hours of culling and editing is roughly 40 hours, so the middle of that range is about $150 an hour — the figure ExpertPhotography's $90,000 plan works back to. So “wedding photography from $2,500, portrait sessions from $150” is a fair line for your website. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.
What to charge in your part of the country
Rates follow the market more than the trade: Fash says beginners make around $25 an hour in Wisconsin and about $80 an hour in New York, and a four-hour event in New York City runs $500–$1,000 against $300–$500 for a small party elsewhere (September 2025). Paperlust puts entry-level wedding photographers at $150–$200 an hour and established or luxury photographers at $400–$600 an hour or more (July 2026).
The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so a $250 portrait session in an average market is about $275 in California and about $215 in Arkansas.
In the US, whether a session fee, a print or a digital file is taxable is set by state: many states tax prints and some tax digital images, and drone photography for pay needs the FAA's Part 107 remote pilot certificate. Check your state's rules before you set the price list.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what a photographer costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: portrait sessions from $150, headshots from $75, event coverage from $150 an hour, weddings from $2,500” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Photography pricing: common questions
$25–$500 an hour, with most charging $94–$262 (Fash, September 2025). By level: semi-pro $75–$150, professional $100–$300, top professionals $200–$500+. Pixpa's bands are $50–$150 for entry-level and $75–$250 for experienced professionals. The calculator above uses the Fash bands.
Professionals charge $75–$350 per edited image, semi-pros $50–$150, and $25–$250 is the full range, about $75 per edited shot on average (Fash, September 2025). Per-image pricing covers the meeting, the setup, the shoot, travel, editing and delivery — so a 10-image job is the same work as a two-hour hourly job.
Most US couples pay $2,500–$4,500 for a full day, $3,000 on average per The Knot's Real Weddings Study of nearly 10,500 couples married in 2025; Zola's marketplace averages $4,400 (Paperlust, July 2026). Fash puts packages at $1,600–$3,600 and hourly wedding rates at $175–$500 (February 2025). Elopement and small-wedding packages are $700–$1,200 for two to three hours (Fash).
$150–$370+ for a session of about an hour, $250 for a typical package (Fash, September 2025); family sessions start at $145 for 30 minutes and run $399–$1,099 in metropolitan areas; senior pictures $125–$350; headshots $75–$325; newborn $320–$650; maternity $350–$1,500+. Pixpa puts portrait sessions at $150–$300.
$150–$250 an hour with a two-hour minimum, then about $100 an hour after that (Fash, September 2025). Small events like birthday parties run $300–$500, a four-hour event in New York City $500–$1,000, and corporate events $200–$600 an hour.
$300–$700 as an add-on (Paperlust, July 2026); Fash puts it at $300–$750. About a third of wedding photographers include one in the base package; the rest charge separately — say which on the price list.
From the hours you can sell, not from a competitor's site. ExpertPhotography's 2026 method: decide what the business must bring in (its example is $90,000), divide by the job hours you can book (600), and you have the rate per hour of job work ($150). A six-hour job then needs $900 before expenses and usage fees.
Yes — a “from” price per session type, with the wedding package starting price and the extras listed, answers the first question before the inquiry. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your rates, and change them when your calendar fills.
