The short answer
Most appliance repair jobs cost $107 to $249, with a national average around $178 (Housecall Pro, August 2026). HomeAdvisor's range is $108–$252 with an average of $180 and labor at $50–$150 an hour (June 2026); HomeGuide puts repairs at $100–$400 and labor at $50–$125 an hour (July 2025).
The visit is its own charge: a diagnostic or service call runs $70–$130 and usually covers the trip and the first look (Housecall Pro; HomeGuide). By appliance, Housecall Pro's typical repair ranges are $150–$400 for a refrigerator, $125–$450 for a washing machine, $100–$550 for a dryer, $70–$600 for a dishwasher and $130–$300 for an oven or range.
Small jobs are priced flat — a belt $60–$190, a thermostat $114–$265, a door gasket $120–$500, an igniter or heating element $100–$350 — and big ones wider: a refrigerator compressor $300–$1,200, a control board $50–$900, a washer motor or drum $400–$900 (Housecall Pro). Same-day or emergency diagnostics run $125–$250, and after-hours commercial work $250–$750 or more. Gas appliances cost 10%–20% more to repair than electric (Fixr, January 2025).
Appliance repair businesses mark jobs up 50%–100% over their cost (Housecall Pro's markup benchmarks by trade, June 2026), and most price the repair flat once they've diagnosed it. Charge the diagnostic on every visit, say whether it comes off the repair, and put the fee and your “from” prices on your website — the customer with a dead fridge calls the first company that tells them what the visit costs.

What should I charge for this repair?
Pick the appliance or the job for a flat price, or hourly labor with the time it takes; say whether it runs on gas, and tick the diagnostic visit. The range uses the published 2026 US figures in the table below; a same-day or emergency diagnostic is $125–$250 instead of the standard visit (Housecall Pro).

repair by appliance (flat price), refrigerator
A starting range from published US figures — the flat prices are what customers typically pay, parts included; the hourly rate is labor only. Not a price for a customer until you've diagnosed the fault: check it against your own costs (the formula below) and your local market before it goes on your price list.

ADD-ONS AND ADJUSTMENTS
What to add for the visit, the fuel and the hour of the day
The drive and the diagnosis are work — charge the visit every time, and more for gas, nights and weekends.

THE PRICING FORMULA
How to price an appliance repair
Six steps from the diagnostic fee to the number on your price list.
Charge the diagnostic
$70–$130 for the visit and the diagnosis (Housecall Pro, August 2026; HomeGuide, July 2025). Decide in advance whether it comes off the repair, and say so before the appointment.
Know your true hourly cost
Wages plus payroll costs, the van, insurance, software and the unbillable hours — then compare it with the $50–$125 an hour the market pays for labor (HomeGuide).
Mark up the job
Appliance repair businesses mark jobs up 50%–100% over cost (Housecall Pro's benchmarks by trade, June 2026): $110 of belt and labor becomes $165–$220 on the invoice. List parts separately, with OEM and luxury-brand parts on their own tier.
Turn common jobs into flat prices
Belt $60–$190, thermostat $114–$265, gasket $120–$500, igniter or element $100–$350 (Housecall Pro). A flat price per job keeps every technician quoting the same number.
Add for gas and for urgency
Gas appliances cost 10%–20% more to repair than electric (Fixr, January 2025). Same-day or emergency diagnostics run $125–$250 against $70–$130 standard, and after-hours commercial work $250–$750 or more (Housecall Pro).
Apply the 50% rule
If the repair approaches half the price of a comparable new appliance, recommend replacement (Housecall Pro) — the customer trusts the next quote more for it.
The formula, worked through
Say a washing machine won't spin and needs a new drive belt — Housecall Pro's own worked example (August 2026).
The diagnostic fee is $95. The belt and the labor cost the company $110; at a 50% target margin the repair is priced at $220. The customer pays $315 in all — the published $60–$190 belt range plus a $70–$130 visit tops out at $320, so the price sits at the top of the market, where a company with a warranty and a same-week slot belongs.
Its second example is a refrigerator compressor: a $95 diagnostic, $650 in compressor, refrigerant and labor cost, a 45% margin, $1,180 for the repair and $1,275 in all — below half the $2,400 replacement, so repairing is the honest recommendation. The figures are the publisher's example; your diagnostic policy, parts prices and labor cost make it yours.
What to charge in your area
The ranges on this page are US national figures. Prices follow local costs: the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100, and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026). So a $100 diagnostic in an average market is about $110 in California and about $87 in Arkansas.
Fixr notes that travel charges of $25–$100 apply when the technician drives a long way (January 2025), and HomeGuide puts an emergency call-out at $140–$400 against $70–$130 standard (July 2025) — a rural company with an hour's drive prices the visit, not just the hour.
Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — a diagnostic fee for the visit, flat prices for common repairs, parts marked up and more for gas and after hours hold everywhere — and check what local repair companies list on their own websites.
Put your prices on your website
A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what appliance repair costs near them.
If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: diagnostic visits from $70, dryer repairs from $100, refrigerator repairs from $150” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Appliance repair pricing: common questions
$70–$130 for the visit and the diagnosis (Housecall Pro, August 2026; HomeGuide, July 2025). Many companies credit it toward the repair when the customer goes ahead — decide your policy and say it before the appointment. The calculator above adds it to any job.
$50–$125 an hour (HomeGuide, July 2025); HomeAdvisor's range is $50–$150 (June 2026) and Fixr's $50–$150 (January 2025). Housecall Pro puts the labor average at about $54 an hour — most companies turn the hours into a flat price per repair once they've diagnosed it.
Housecall Pro's typical ranges are $150–$400 for a refrigerator, $125–$450 for a washing machine and $100–$550 for a dryer (August 2026); a refrigerator compressor is its own job at $300–$1,200. HomeGuide's ranges are $125–$500, $100–$400 and $100–$300 (July 2025).
50%–100% over your cost is the common range for appliance repair (Housecall Pro's markup benchmarks by trade, June 2026), against 35%–60% for handyman work and 40%–70% for plumbing. A 50% markup is a 33% margin; the markup pays for sourcing, stocking, the warranty and the trip to the parts counter.
Yes — gas appliance repairs cost 10%–20% more than electric, with Fixr's typical range at $150–$450 against $100–$375 (January 2025). The parts cost more and the work carries more risk and more safety steps.
A same-day or emergency diagnostic runs $125–$250 against $70–$130 standard, and after-hours commercial repairs $250–$750 or more (Housecall Pro, August 2026). HomeGuide puts an emergency call-out at $140–$400 (July 2025). A flat emergency fee on top of your normal rate is the simplest to explain.
When the repair approaches 50% of the price of a comparable new appliance (Housecall Pro's rule). HomeGuide adds age: a washer over 10 years, a dishwasher over 5–8, a fridge over 10 (July 2025). Putting the recommendation in writing wins the next call.
Yes — your diagnostic fee, whether it's credited to the repair, and “from” prices for the common jobs. It answers the first question before the phone rings and gives an AI assistant a real number to quote. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your prices, and change them any time.
