The short answer

A whole car runs $99 to $850, and the film decides most of it: $99–$350 in dyed film, $150–$450 in carbon and $350–$850 in ceramic (Rayno, a film maker, February 2024). Kelley Blue Book puts a sedan at $250–$500 and says nano-ceramic installs cost about 20% more than ordinary ceramic (July 2025).

The vehicle sets your end of the range: a five-window coupe $120–$450, an SUV $250–$750, a pickup around $350 (Rayno). Shops' own published price guides sit around those bands: a Kansas City shop's guide to local rates puts a sedan in dyed film at $200–$249 and an SUV or truck in ceramic at $349–$649, an Ohio shop's guide starts the front two windows at $149 and a whole car at $349 in carbon or $449 in ceramic, and a Bay Area shop prints its own menu at $380 in dyed film and from $480 to $850 in ceramic — above Rayno's dyed band.

List the extras separately: a windshield visor strip $49–$99 and a sunroof $49–$200 (the Kansas City guide), old tint removed for $40–$150 and a clear film over the whole windshield $250 (the Bay Area shop's menu — most states allow film only on a strip at the top of the windshield, so check yours).

Homes and offices are priced by the square foot: $5–$20 installed, security film up to $26, old film off at $3–$5, and Fixr puts the usual professional minimum at around $392 (January 2025). Measure width × height in inches ÷ 144 for square feet, then add 15% for cut waste (Tint Wiz).

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price window tint

Six steps from the film and the glass to a price list a driver can read before they call.

01

Price by the film first

Film is the biggest lever on a car: $99–$350 dyed, $150–$450 carbon, $350–$850 ceramic (Rayno). Offer two or three films, not ten — the customer chooses a film, then a shade.

02

Then by the glass

More glass, more film and more time: a coupe $120–$450, an SUV $250–$750, a pickup around $350 (Rayno). Kelley Blue Book's sedan band is $250–$500; a large SUV with a sunroof in nano-ceramic can reach $1,000 or more.

03

Cost your hours honestly

Pay sets the floor: automotive glass installers' 2025 median is $22.90 an hour (O*NET). Time your own installs by vehicle and add rent, film and the redo you'll occasionally owe.

04

List the extras as lines

Visor strip $49–$99, sunroof $49–$200 (a Kansas City shop's guide to local rates); old tint off $40–$150 and clear windshield film $250 where your state allows film below the top strip (a Bay Area shop's menu). Separate lines keep the headline price honest.

05

Measure flat glass by the square foot

Width × height in inches ÷ 144, plus 15% for cut waste; dual-reflective film $7–$11 a sq ft, ceramic and spectrally selective $12–$25 (Tint Wiz). Fixr puts the usual professional minimum at around $392.

06

Publish “from” prices

Shops on Google's first page print their prices — an Ohio shop's guide shows the front two windows from $149, carbon from $349 and ceramic from $449 (Finesse Customs). A price on the page answers the first question before a driver phones the next shop.

The formula, worked through

A car menu. Say you carry carbon and ceramic film. Rayno puts a sedan at about $250 in carbon and about $650 in ceramic, a coupe at $120–$450 and an SUV at $250–$750. A list of “sedans from $250 in carbon and $650 in ceramic, SUVs from $300 in carbon, visor strip $60, old tint removed from $40” matches Rayno's sedan figures. Kelley Blue Book's $250–$500 sedan band doesn't split by film, so a $650 ceramic sedan sits above it — as the upper film lines on the Bay Area shop's $480–$850 ceramic menu do.

A home job. Five windows of 24 × 36 inches are 24 × 36 ÷ 144 = 6 sq ft each, 30 sq ft in all; plus 15% for cut waste, 34.5 sq ft. At Tint Wiz's $12–$25 a sq ft for ceramic flat-glass film that is about $414–$863 — above the ~$392 professional minimum Fixr cites, so the minimum doesn't bite. In dual-reflective film at $7–$11 it would be about $242–$380, under that minimum, which is exactly the job a minimum is for.

The arithmetic is ours; the rates are the publishers'.

What to charge in your part of the country

The shops' published prices show the spread: dyed film on a sedan from $200 in the Kansas City guide against $380 on the Bay Area shop's menu. Across all prices, the Bureau of Economic Analysis puts California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — a $250 carbon sedan in an average market is about $277 in California and about $217 in Arkansas.

Your state's tint law shapes your list. In the US, every state sets how dark each window may be, written as VLT — the share of light the glass and film let through. For the front side windows the limit is 70% in California and New York, 50% in Ohio, 33% in Arizona, 28% in Florida, 25% in Texas and 20% in New Mexico, and New Jersey allows no film there at all (Rayno's state chart, updated August 2026). Windshields are restricted too — every state limits windshield tint (Kelley Blue Book), most allow film only on a strip at the top, and some, such as Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, allow no windshield film at all (Rayno's chart) — so check before you list a clear windshield film. Charts lag the statutes, so treat any chart as a starting point; our guide to starting a window tinting business sets out the rules that bind the installer, state by state. Price by film, list the legal shades for your state beside it, and check your state's current statute and DMV before you print a shade on the page.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what window tint costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: sedans from $250 in carbon film and $650 in ceramic, SUVs from $300, windshield strip $60, home window film from $8 a square foot” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Window tint pricing: common questions

How much should I charge to tint a car?

$99–$850 for the whole car: $99–$350 in dyed film, $150–$450 in carbon, $350–$850 in ceramic (Rayno, February 2024). Kelley Blue Book puts a sedan at $250–$500 (July 2025). The calculator above uses these bands and three shops' published price guides.

How much should I charge for ceramic tint?

$350–$850 for a whole car (Rayno), about $650 on a sedan. Shops' published prices: $249–$800 for a sedan and $349–$649 for an SUV or truck in a Kansas City shop's guide to local rates, from $449 in an Ohio shop's guide, $480 to $850 by film line on a Bay Area shop's menu. Kelley Blue Book says nano-ceramic installs cost about 20% more than ordinary ceramic.

How much should I charge for the front two windows?

An Ohio shop's guide starts the front two windows at $149, against $349 for a whole car in carbon (Finesse Customs, read November 2026). List it as its own line, so a driver who only wants the fronts sees a price.

What should I charge for a windshield strip, a sunroof or tint removal?

A visor strip $49–$99 and a sunroof $49–$200 in a Kansas City shop's guide to local rates; old tint removed for $40 (front windows) to $150 (the whole car without the windshield) and clear film over the whole windshield $250 on a Bay Area shop's menu (updated November 2026). Most states allow windshield film only on a strip at the top and some allow none (Rayno's chart), so check your state before you list it.

How do I price home and office window film?

By the square foot: $5–$20 installed in Fixr's figures, security film up to $26, old film removed for $3–$5 (January 2025). Tint Wiz's formula is width × height in inches ÷ 144, times your rate, plus 15% for waste — $7–$11 a sq ft for dual-reflective film and $12–$25 for ceramic and spectrally selective film. Set a minimum: Fixr puts the usual professional one at around $392.

Can I sell any shade a customer asks for?

No. In the US each state sets the darkest legal film for each window — front sides, rear sides, the back glass and the windshield. On the front sides it's 70% VLT in California and New York, 25% in Texas, 20% in New Mexico and no film at all in New Jersey (Rayno's chart, August 2026), and rear limits vary too. Kelley Blue Book notes many states grant medical exemptions through the DMV. Charts lag the law, so check your state's current statute and DMV, and put your state's legal shades beside your prices.

Should I put my window tint prices on my website?

Yes — Google's first page for “window tint prices” is shops' own price pages, and a “from” price by film and vehicle is what the driver came for. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your films and vehicles, and change it when your film costs move.
