Backups are saved copies of your whole site from specific moments, like when your site was first created or each time you publish. If something goes wrong, you can bring one of them back. (Just deleted a section by accident? The Undo arrow in the top bar is the quickest fix — see "Undo or Backups?" below.)
Your work saves as you go
Every change you make in the editor is saved to your draft automatically. On a computer, the top bar shows when your changes were last saved. You don't need to do anything to keep your work.
Saving is not the same as making a backup, though. Most edits update your draft without adding a backup (the exceptions are listed below), so Backups may not have a copy of your most recent changes.
When Zarla makes a backup
Zarla adds a backup automatically when:
- Your site is first created. This backup is called Original version. It shows your site as it was first built, before any of your changes.
- You publish. Each publish saves a backup named with the date, like Published Sep 24.
- You restore a backup. Right before the restore, Zarla saves your site as it was, in a backup called Before restore.
- You switch to a new design. Clicking Keep this design saves a backup called Before design change, followed by the design's name.
- The editor chat is about to make a big change. Before the chat removes a section or a page, or changes three or more parts of your site at once, Zarla saves your site as it was. The backup is named after your request, like Before: remove any mention of snacks, and the chat tells you it saved one.
Apps connected to Zarla (like an AI assistant you've linked to your site) also save backups before the changes they make. And you can save a backup yourself at any time (see below).
Check a backup before you restore it
Restoring replaces your whole draft with the backup, including everything you've done since that backup was made. So look first:
- Open your site in the editor. On a computer, click Edit Site in the sidebar. On a phone, tap Edit Site in the bottom menu bar.
- Open Backups. On a computer, it's in the editor's left panel, and also behind the clock button in the top bar. On a phone, tap the button at the top right of the editor (it reads Publish, Go Live or similar), then Backups. If that corner shows Live instead, the menu isn't available on your phone at the moment — open Backups on a computer.
- Find the backup you want. The top row is marked Latest. That only means it's the newest backup. It isn't necessarily how your site looks right now.
- Click the three dots next to the backup, then click Preview. The backup opens in a new tab so you can check it.
Be careful with Original version. It's your site as it was first built. Restoring it removes every change you've made since then.
Restore a backup
- Click the three dots next to the backup, then click Restore.
- When you see Restore this version?, click Restore to confirm.
Restoring only changes your draft. Your live site stays the same until you publish again.
Undo a restore
Before every restore, Zarla saves your site in a backup called Before restore. If the restore didn't give you what you wanted, restore Before restore to go back to where you were.
Save a backup before a big change
About to make a big change, like rewriting your pages or trying a new layout? Open Backups and click Save current version first. It's saved with today's date (for example Saved Sep 25) and marked Saved by you. You can rename it from the three-dot menu, and delete it when you no longer need it.
Undo or Backups?
- Undo (the arrow in the top bar) steps back through your recent changes, one at a time, up to your last 30. It only remembers changes from your current visit to the editor. If you reload the page or leave the editor, the Undo history is cleared.
- Backups bring back your whole site as it was at one of the moments listed above.
Good to know
- Zarla keeps about 50 backups per site. When there are more, the oldest automatic backups are removed first. Original version, your Published backups, the ones you saved yourself and the newest automatic backup are always kept.
